Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, born 1874 in Ogulin, was one of the most significat children's story writers in Croatia and worldwide. She started writing poetry, essays and diaries very eraly but her first works were published in early 20th century. Her first brakethrough came with a children's story "Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića (Mysterious Adventures of apprentice Hlapic)" in 1913. In 1916 she wrote "Priče iz davnine (Stories of the old)", a collection of stories based on slavic mithology and it's considered to be her crowning achievement. Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić was twice nominated for the Nobel prize and became the first female member of the Akademija znanosti i umjetnosti (Academy of science and art). Croatian literary prize for promoting creativity in children's literature was named after her.
