Alecsandri was a Romanian poet, playwright, politician, and diplomat. He collected Romanian folk songs and was one of the principal animators of the 19th century movement for Romanian cultural identity and union of Moldavia and Wallachia. His work is an exemple of Romantism with such themes as love, nature, history etc. His poetry is most known for the treatement of pastel poems, a first in Romanian literature. His natural settings are always serene and ideal, picturing mostly the scenery around his mansion in Mircesti. As a playright, he is famous for the Chirite comical series, portraying a middle-class family from Moldova of that time and their sudden aspirations to appear more educated and well-to-do than they really were.
