After his first year of college, he followed his brother's lead, joined the Navy, and became a Navy SEAL. Among all the rigorous athletic challenges a Navy SEAL faces, such as navigating intimidating obstacle courses, swimming many miles in the ocean, running timed long distances, and completing the famed Hell Week, he competed in several other organized sports while in the Navy. He amassed more than 3500 jumps and at one time was considered a world-class skydiver. Joe was passionate about volleyball, was the Captain of his Navy team, and was selected to the All-Navy Volleyball team. He also played in organized Navy tennis, intramural flag football and inter-service tackle football.


At about age thirty his body began breaking down. He later started developing severe back pain, which became chronic and a constant struggle in his daily life. When doctors in the Navy advised him that he needed back surgery, he decided to get an education about the body himself to understand how to heal his own body.

With his extensive athletic experience, Dr. LaCaze's passion has been careful assessment of athletes who have sought his guidance in injury prevention, rehabilitation, performance, and recovery methods. Through the information and findings from thousands of athletic assessments, he has discovered new and important things about how the body actually works. His work has brought him to a deep understanding of the body and has in turn enabled him to help many people from all walks of life.

Although he has worked with professional, college, Olympic and club sports programs, his passion is helping young athletes getting started in the right way. This book is a culmination of his life work and experience.
