Jesuit priest, professor, archeologist, born in Cologne on 6 January 1902, entered the Society of Jesus on 11 April 1921; 28 August 1931. The professorship for Christian Archaeology and History of Art was entrusted to him in 1929 in Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt, and in 1939 at the Gregoriana in Rome. A considerable part of his scientific work was dedicated to the excavation of the tomb of St Peter in the crypt of St Peter in Rome, and he worked as a consulter in excavations made at Monte Cassino and Compstella after World War II. Fr Kirschbaum died in Rome on 28 March 1970.
