Tom Duerig was born in Pittsburgh. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics and a PhD in materials science. Duerig spent 11 years researching a peculiar metal, shape memory alloys, in both Switzerland and Silicon Valley, Calif. In 1991, he founded a company making cardiovascular stents from the alloys. He sold the company to Johnson&Johnson in 1997 but repurchased it in 2008. He resides in Fremont, Calif.
