Joseph Stoll enjoyed reading and writing from a young age. In his free time, he would choose this over any other activity. In 1942, Joseph and his family settled in Southern Michigan, the setting for his book, Shagbark Hickory.
While he lived in Canada, he and some others started Pathway Publishers to meet the needs of the Old Order Amish community. There was a sore lack of Amish writings.
When he moved to help start an Amish colony in Honduras, his writing did not stop. He wrote Fire in the Zurich Hills and began Shagbark Hickory. He also aided in the translation of his book, The Drummer's Wife, into the Spanish language. A bold task concidering he did not know much of the language when arriving to Honduras.
