    • Rated 5 stars

Silent Scream takes you from the beginning to the end of serial killer Gerard Schaefer’s horrendous killing spree and then through the myriad of complexities in the criminal justice system. I was literally glued to this book! This book is disturbing, but I still found that I couldn’t put it down. But what’s even more disturbing is that the serial killer was a police officer who used his badge and gun to terrorize, torture, and kill young women in Florida between 1966-1972.

Books that involve serial crime, either fiction or nonfiction, fascinate me. Yvonne Mason has expertly crafted this true crime story to unfold with a continued escalating pace. A real page-turner! She has captured the evil soul of Gerard Schaefer and has also given a voice to the many victims. The extensive research conducted for this book is absolutely top notch.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys true crime or crime fiction genres. I’m anxious to read more books by this author in the future.

    Hello, My Love

    by Chase Brooks
    • Rated 5 stars

The life and times of high school freshman Carrie Dawson comes to life in the new novel “Hello, My Love”. This feisty teenager teaches us about love, friendship, humor, heartache, and high school after surviving the tragic death of her father. She is torn between her best friend, Ben and a new relationship of a popular high school jock. A day doesn’t go by without her best friend and cousin, Jess, along for the ride. One of the most important questions she tries to find the answer to is, “Will she ever find that perfect love relationship like in the movie Grease?

This story is highly entertaining and there are many surprises along the way that keeps you turning the pages. I found myself engrossed in each chapter wondering what was going to happen next. The characters have depth and are wonderfully complicated. You literally cheer for the characters and the decisions that they ultimately make. The story unfolds with a fast pace and it captures high school life with perfect clarity.

I completely enjoyed this book. It’s a perfect book for the young and young at heart. I expect to see more novels and even screenplays from Chase Brooks in the future. I can’t wait for the next book.

  • Trouble in the Elf City: The Silent Warrior Trilogy - Book Two
    • Rated 5 stars

This is a wonderful adventure that immediately draws you into the story from the first page. The city of the elfs and Adren’s serene life are confronted by enemies that they can’t fight alone. Their beautiful city is now under attack and possibly faces a disaster that could wipe out their entire existence. Will the Silent Warrior be able to save them all?

I have to confess, I usually gravitate toward the thriller and mystery genres. However, “Trouble in Elf City” has it all with mystery, action, adventure, romance, suspense, and family values. I truly enjoyed this book. The characters have depth and are full of life. You really feel like you’re involved in the story every step of the way with brilliant plot twists and surprises. This is a fantasy adventure that will bring enjoyment to all ages.

I highly recommend this book for any fantasy adventure fans of J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S.Lewis, and J.K. Rowling. I look forward to Dye’s next book in the series.

Great Horror Tale – Real Page-Turner!

Steven Weaver, his wife Tara, and their two children inherit a family estate in the lovely, picturesque town of Astral, Pennsylvania. They decided that they wanted to get away from the big city and enjoy the vast acreage and freedom of living in a small rural town. Strange incidents begin happening to each member of the family almost immediately from old family secrets, an old creepy overgrown well, basements without exits, and an attic that seems to go on forever. The story unravels with the entertaining elements of Stephen King novels and the X-Files.

I was pleasantly surprised and was eagerly engrossed when I began reading “The Family Bones”. It definitely kept me quickly turning the pages until the end – I finished it in one afternoon. The horror story began to build almost immediately and takes you on many twists and turns. It’s truly creepy and clever. Trust me, you won’t be able to guess the ending!

Kimberly Raiser knows how to spin a horror tale at a rapid pace and has found her perfect writing genre. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to horror and paranormal fans out there. My only question is… what’s next from Raiser?

    A Case for Vengeance

    by J. P. Brennan
    • Rated 5 stars

    Take an Action/Adventure Thrill Ride!

Evan Moore is just an average guy from Pennsylvania that decides to a vacation in Italy. The most exciting thing that has ever happened to him is just another boring day as a copy clerk. He’s basically a quiet and somewhat naive twenty-six year old. Moore enjoys the sights in Rome, but it all changes when he unwittingly takes a digital photograph of two men in suits. He quickly gets thrust into an insidious plot of an al-Qaeda conspiracy where life as he knows it will never be the same.

J.P. Brennan cleverly weaves an exciting storyline with unforgettable characters in “A Case For Vengeance”. The story grips you from the first page with intense intrigue and mounting fear. Brennan describes foreign locales and gritty adversaries with sharp clarity. There are only a few quiet moments to let you catch your breath, but it is quickly averted with surprises to continue on with this adventure. “A Case For Vengeance” is a live action suspense read and anyone who loves terrorist thrillers will enjoy this book. I highly recommend this book to avid thriller readers. I hope to read more from this writer in the near future.

Chilling Mystery with Plenty of Surprises

Eight-year-old Carl Weber met his untimely death twenty-five years earlier when he fell through the ice of a winter pond one fateful winter evening. Mystery and strange happenings still shroud his tragic death. Mike Adams, his wife, and seven-year-old daughter inherit the beautiful estate across the street from the pond and it doesn’t take long for strange and unsettling events to begin to happen. There are family secrets that don’t seem to want to stay hidden. The odd elderly couple that reside in the farmhouse across the street seem to be mixed up somehow in the paranormal events and ghostly apparitions now plaguing the Adams family.

“The Pond” is an engaging mystery that weaves a wonderful balance of mystery, suspense, paranormal occurrences, and hidden family secrets. There is a wonderful array of characters that breathes depth and realism to help keep the reader completely caught up in the story. I really felt at times that I was almost a part of the family.

All of the unsettling events ultimately take you on a ghostly and chilling ride right up to the end. Lawrence writes a solid story that mystery and paranormal fans will love. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a great and entertaining read. I can’t wait to for Lawrence’s next book.

  • The Broken Window
    • Rated 5 stars

Big brother is watching through "The Broken Window". Once again, Criminalist Lincoln Rhyme and Detective Amelia Sachs work together to solve one of their most difficult cases to date – a serial killer known only as “522” who preys on victims through their own electronic footprints of day to day life by expertly framing them for his horrific murders. Everything we do and buy is recorded and scrutinized for insidious criminals to prey upon. “The Broken Window” is truly a scary look into what could happen in the electronic world as the story builds great suspense and intrigue with every page. For those of you who haven’t read any Lincoln Rhyme novels, he’s a well-known crime scene detective that suffered a serious injury that left him a quadriplegic. This story also lets the reader in on a more personal side of Rhyme by introducing his cousin and his family life growing up.

Rhyme and Sachs are joined by solid, interesting characters along with a lengthily list of possible suspects. The story gets even more interesting the closer Rhyme gets to the “real” killer and then the tables turn on him and his crew. It’s more of a cat and mouse “whodunit” thrill that will definitely keep you guessing until the end. If you think you know who the killer is – think again.

The story starts out great, but then gets a bit slow with all the related background information until about halfway into the book. Keep reading -- you won’t be disappointed. I have been a big fan of Lincoln Rhyme Novels since “The Bone Collector” and this story is now one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book for anyone that enjoys high thrills and “whodunit” mysteries.

  • The Associate
    • Rated 4 stars

I have to confess that I haven’t read any books by John Grisham in a while, but when “The Associate” hit the bookstores, I felt compelled to read this book. I was taken back by the great difference in opinion with current reviews, but quickly put them aside as I enjoyed the book with only a couple of objections.

It is true that this story is somewhat reminiscent of “The Firm”, but with a distinction of the outside sources blackmailing the main character into stealing secrets from the biggest law firm in the world. Young Yale graduate, Kyle McAvoy, is being blackmailed by an unknown secret source and by a handler known only as “Bennie Wright” for his participation in a possible frat house rape years before. McAvoy must secretly steal documents from a large and controversial lawsuit or fear the consequences of a damaging video going public.

This book is an easy read in Grisham’s typical storytelling style. It begins with an interesting angle, but keeps a somewhat monotonous pace until page 104. Then the story picks up with interesting angles and begins to unfold in the usual entertaining fashion. At times, I did feel that the book read more like a field report from a private investigator than a thriller novel. My main complaint would be that the character of “Bennie Wright” should have been more of an integral part of the storyline. We needed to see this crafty and secret character conducting business so that it would really pull the reader into a more suspenseful mode for McAvoy. I think the reader would have felt more distress and not feel cheated with the ending. As far as the ending goes, it has an ending but maybe not as satisfying as most would like.

If you want a nice easy weekend read in the standard Grisham style, I would recommend this book. However, if you’re expecting a giant climatic scene with an aggressive confrontation, you will not find that with this book.

  • The Brass Verdict
    • Rated 4 stars

Michael Connelly’s “The Brass Verdict” is a well-written, taunt, suspenseful read. Defense attorney, Michael “Mickey” Haller inherits his murdered friend’s high profile law firm. This no doubt comes with a high price complete with the case of the decade involving a Hollywood producer accused of murdering his wife and her lover. If that’s not enough, enter Detective Harry Bosch who then squares off against Mickey Haller. It’s Bosch versus Haller and neither is backing down. Haller then unwittingly becomes the bait and the story really breaks loose.

“The Brass Verdict” is an enjoyable read. The narrative is strong with an intriguing storyline and the characters are woven well throughout the book. It begins a bit slow up to about page 90 giving the reader a background of all of the cases. It feels at times that you’re an employee at a law firm instead of a reader. If you are a bit bored, hang in there because it definitely picks up. I would consider this book a suspense or mystery instead of a thriller.

The only downside was that I guessed a major part of what was going to happen by page 100. However, there are still some great twists to give a satisfying ending to the story. Also, to all of you Bosch fans out there, beware; he is definitely a secondary character in this story. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great suspenseful read.
