I always enjoy Karen Kingsbury's books and this was the sequel to one I already had called "Even Now" so I enjoyed reading a bit more of the characters' stories. :) This book was centered around the whole war-in-Iraq debate and I found it quite interesting and thought-provoking. So if you prefer to stay out of the America vs Iraq issues, don't read this book. If you're not worried about sticking your head in the sand, however, it's a good read. :)

  • How to Avoid the 10 Mistakes Single Women Make
    • Rated 4 stars

It took me forever to read this book, partly because I was wanting to absorb it and partly because it's probably not quite comfortably fitting my current season in life. :) However, Michelle always has good things to say and her books are worth reading. I think I've also learnt some of it the hard way, but if you prefer to take wise advice rather than make the mistakes, have a read!

  • Not Without My Daughter

I first saw the movie based on this book last year at the recommendation of a friend. It is a chilling watch. Wanting to read the book, I was excited to snag a copy at a market in Mount Gambier back in January. I have now finally read it! This is the true story of an American woman whose Iranian husband took her and their daughter back to Iran for a visit and then refused to let them leave. Betty finds herself powerless in a country where all the power is in the hands of the husband. This is the gripping account of her virtual imprisonment in Iran and the amazing escape that she finally obtains. The only thing that I found disappointing in this book is the elements of Islam that she mixes with her Christianity. The depth of her belief is unclear, but she definitely has a faith in God. However, as time goes on, she believes that God and Allah are the same. She just is willing to use whatever faith elements will possibly help her. However, if you like true stories and having your eyes opened, this is definitely a worthwhile read.

  • Small Acts of Grace: You Can Make a Difference in Everday, Ordinary Ways
    • Rated 5 stars

I've been reading this book for ages as I wanted to read each chapter one at a time to let things sink in. There's so much to think about! The sub-title for this book is "You can make a difference in everyday, ordinary ways". This is a great book; so inspiring. From the first moment I pulled it off the shelf at Koorong, it felt like a breath of fresh air. :) It is one of the most refreshing books to read. Very encouraging and inspirational; a very easy read.

The sequel to a book I read earlier in the year. It was interesting to find out more about the story. I have to say, though, these two books must be read carefully and back-to-back or you go crazy trying to keep everybody straight!! Because of the nature of the story, the situation and the times, family relationships are quite complex. I could do with reading both books through again. Definitely an interesting read, though.

  • Not Your Parents' Marriage: Bold Partnership for a New Generation

I got some really good things out of this book and would recommend it but with a caution: I thought they over-simplified the issue of roles as presented in Scripture. Really, in their minds, it seemed almost a non-event. This, however, is not what the book is primarily about so I think it is worth the read if you already have a grasp of the roles of men and women in marriage.

A book about JAG court/law (I like them!) and religion. Pretty content-sensitive--you'd want to be careful where you left this one laying around (eg, for me, at work)--but certainly presents an interesting scenario.

An ok read. Not the best ever, but I'm sure you could learn something. I probably come from a different direction than they do, so their book wouldn't be my map for relationships.

Hayley DiMarco does nothing if not say things plainly! There's some confronting things in this book and it's a good one to pass around to spread the word. She and her husband are authors whose new books I would always take at least a few minutes to check out and consider buying.

Francine Rivers is probably my second favourite author. :) Some things in this book, you could really see coming, but at the same time they were also a good reminder that in, in the moment, we would probably be just as blind--but for a reminder and the grace of God.
