Another killer! Do read "Heartsick" first- you'll be sorry if you don't. I don't like to give spoilers, so I won't, but for the possibility of future discussion I will say that the author adds a bit of back story here for what I feel is an unnecessary sort of justification or explanation of an interesting psychological theme of the books. Chelsea, I'm sorry you felt like you had to do that!!

This was a fun read waaay back when I read it. It quickly developed a cult following and in the day we all quoted from it often, the most popular of course being "42". I was slightly amazed to find a resurgence of it's cultishness among a whole new generation of readers, because for some reason I thought it a somewhat timely book, with a particular relevance to my generation. I'm going to have to put it on my reread list, because either it's more timeless than I remember, or the current generation of readers are stuck in a time loop. Hahahaha!

This is a great first book! Hell, it would be a great 5th or 10th book! The blurbs aren't kidding when they say that Gretchen is the most interesting and seductive serial killer since Hannibal Lecter, and to my delight she is a woman written by a woman! Now we have 2 terribly twisted, but fatally attractive serial killers; one of each! Yay!!!
Archie, the cop and serial killer task force leader is no slouch as a protagonist, either! He's every bit as fully developed and interesting a character as Clarice was in Silence of the lambs, and we love him even more for his vulnerabiity, Vicodin addiction and his intricate relationship with Gretchen.
The torture scenes are a little too real sometimes. I had to actually put the book down for a few moments at one point.
This is a must read for fans of the genre and a damn near must read for anyone else, too! 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

I love Francesca a little more with each of her books. Quakeland is touching, deep and evocative. The prose is lyrical and complex. It resonates in our everywoman soul with a wealth of shared experience and heart.

This is a simply beautiful book. I was entrenched and transported from the very first page. The prose is elegant, earthy and vivid. The story carries one along like the tide; constant and irresistible. It's a brilliant first book and after finishing it I'm finding myself somehow nostalgic for an imagined past and forgotten memories.
(Can you tell I can't bear to give anything about the story away? Haha! Just read it!!!)

I put up with Piers' sexism as being a construct of his generation through the Adept, Xanth and Immortality series, because all the books were overall good reads, and a bit of fun. Until this book. This book is one of the most disturbing combinations of sexism, and pedophilia justification (think "Lolita") that I've seen in a mainstream contemporary author. I was so soured on him as a person after reading this book, I haven't picked him up since.
**Both thumbs down and a bit attendant of nausea.

This is a GREAT version of this book! Leave it to King to explore every possible presentation of his work. I read this (and interacted) with my 6 year old Grandaughter. Her Mom was a bit tense, but trusted my judgement and we all enjoyed it immensely!
