“Very uneven tale. It's as if the narrator can't decide which story to tell-- that of his break up, that of his emotional recovery or that of his travels. Most unfortunately-- though there are a few moments of good storytelling-- none of these work. I ended up knowing very little about his brother-- all comments are superficial at best. The story of his ex-fiancĂ©e had promise but ultimately shows a callousness (btw I do find it curious that he spends some time describing how he makes love to other women-- in a Harlequin, bodice-ripping kind of way-- while skipping any descriptions of any countries that he visits). The travelogues have some moments of interest but, in general, the accounts of his travels, like the letters written to his beloved grandmother, give no sense of place, narrator or emotion.”
