I read this aloud to my 90 year old, Alabama-raised, LSU alumni mom. Maybe because it's helped her begin to recover some of her cognitive skills after a series of small strokes, but I had to rate this as an "I love it" book. Loved the characters, loved the full range from the humorous to the poignant and to the outrage of "how could one group of people treat another group so degradingly?" An eye-opener for my mom, who saw the society she grew up in from an entirely different perspective. Nice to know that you really are never too old to learn.

The second book the girls selected for the book discussion group. Historical fiction, which is often a tough sell to adolescents, but the author is so well liked that this persuaded the girls to read it. Focuses on the shirtwaist factory fire -- so issues of unfair labor practices, the women's suffrage movement, unions, immigration... The fact that the story is told in alternating chapters from the three central characters' perspectives made it especially rich for a group of girls exploring what it means to be a female.

Read this with my 8th grade girls book discussion group. A strong female protagonist, but the girls were split as to whether they embraced her "get noticed at any cost" attitude. Good for a discussion about male-female relationships and cliques.

I'm reading this book for the third time with my 7th grade language arts students, and realizing each day why I loved this book from the start. Tight, powerful writing style that keeps the action going while giving the character-oriented reader satisfying details that help make those connections happen. Even my reluctant readers are hooked, hooked, hooked. The biggest problem is keeping them from reading ahead. Topics of cloning and Mexican drug wars make this perfect for bringing in current events. Great introduction to dystopian novels and could be paired perfectly with classic texts such as 1984 or Brave New World.

Entering the world of a young girl with an eating disorder is intense -- almost claustrophobic -- but an unforgetable experience. Bravo to Anderson for once again breaking new ground in topic and writing style.
