Some things I love: Creamy hot latte that tastes like dessert; robin's egg blue skies with big fluffy clouds; crossword puzzles hard enough to keep me guessing but not so hard I give up; a new season of "Lost" or "Heroes"; all the lights turning green and no one in my way; uninterrupted solitude; people who "get" me; exploring an unfamiliar... more »

Yes, the '80's are making a comeback! Good question about the kids getting worse, or teachers just being fuddy-duddy. Every generation of teachers thinks that young people have gone straight to Satan. But, this current generation raised on rap music is by far the most difficult that I've delt with in 23 years of teaching. The concept of "respect for adults simply because they are adults" is a dinosaur. They truly feel as if they have total say-so over their time and energies and attitudes, and anyone who tries to direct them toward a place they don't want to go (like page 237 section D) is to be ignored, then scorned. If any remote attempt at pursuasion is attempted, they do not hesitate to display their contempt. Of course, I am referring to only 70% of the students; there is still a remnant who will treat me with respect simply because I am the teacher and they are the student. Perhaps I am a bit old to know how to work with this mentality (I'm 52), so maybe I am the modern version of fuddy-duddy :) This current bunch feels that education is optional, and any attempt to pull them into a more positive mindset is "coersion", "racist" or "bullying". Our hands are tied by legalities (supreme court seems to be on their side) to the extent that there isn't really anything we can do about it if a student completely dismisses our authority. Authority is not in their network...it's a defeated thing of the past. I'd better get off this soap box! I could write a 10,000 word essay!!

Wow Wow Wow! You've read so many books! You're either as old as me or you can read much faster than I can! Thanks for including your "Things I love" and "Things I hate". The one that got the heart-felt amen from me was on the "hate list" (willful ignorance".

LOL yep another cyber monkey... hahahha. I don't know if I will ever get ALL my books on here... I actually own a Sony reader (PRS 700) I LOVE it! I am slowly trying to replace the books I already own onto the reader AND try to keep me in new books. I must have 1000 + books down stairs i will eventually be able to give away :) If you read as much as I do I would strongly recommend the reader, unless you are in the states then just get the Kindle.. we can't get that here yet.
Thanks again for this site how GREAT!

The last book I read was Ayatollah Khomeini's writings. Talk about throw-up material! Still, it's important for my study to discover how really stuck in a time-warp space Muslim militants are.

    Ahhh,:

    That you are my dear

Athena. That you are. I Love the fact that you are in touch with the other dimensions of yourselves. For Man (Woman too) are only spirits that possessed souls that live in bodies. I applaud you for coming to what I have learned, is a very, very, awesome discovery.
as for your books....I know that we have quite a feew books in common. I discovered that many a moon ago, when I requested we be friends: Or vise-versa. Any-hoo, thanx for the befriending, sorry, if I am so late doing so. It's been soooo long, I am not really sure if I did originally. Oh well, I heard somewhere, that it's better late than never. So, I pray that you only feel the same.

With great admiration & Love do I write!

PS. Looking forward to becoming better friends, if that is alright with you?

Was thrilled to see that you loved Gary Paulson's autobiography. It's one of my favorites! We even had the same furniture in Okinawa that he had in the Philippines. Also love how the library and librarian started him reading. Judy

Thank you, and for the sweet note as well. I suppose I came across as quite naive! Which is ok, often am. But the concern was genuine.

I just finished MILESTONES by Sayyid Qutb, executed by Egyptian authorities in 1966, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and one of Osama's favorite authors. His rigid, orthodox understanding of Islam became the basis for the establishment of Hamas.
