“The Red Pony was alright, but I'm rating this four stars for the inclusion (in my edition) of the short story "Junius Maltby". Although at first it seems like an odd inclusion with The Red Pony, Junius Maltby exemplifies the loss of innocence that is a central theme to The Red Pony. A bit of searching tells me this is pulled from Pastures of Heaven, one of Stienbeck's earlier collections of short stories (which I will definately be reading next).
As has been said many times before, I don't think Stienbeck can ever recieve enough praise for so beautifully capturing the people and land he loved. Stienbeck has given a voice to California. ”
