I’m Ashley Rae, somewhat of a dreamer, and every bit a pisces. I'm a victim of wanderlust, and my dream is to travel the world. I take pleasure in simple things such as a cup of tea, a handwritten letter, sunsets, car lights dancing across my walls at... more »

    Hi Ashley Rae,

I still haven't read "Travels with Charley." I've meant to read this book for so long. I need to go back and see your rating.

Hi Ashley Rae. I'm looking for a group here on Shelfari where an over 50 year old like myself can feel comfortable. Although it's wonderful to see so many young people enjoying the love of books, I'd prefer to talk books with people nearer to my own age. I looked at your bookshelf and we have 33 books in common -- so I thought I'd ask you if you have any suggestions for a group that I may join. Thanks

    Hi Ashley -
Re: The Historian, I don't want to dim your enthusiasm for a good sale find! I loved the initial set-up but thought a really brutal editor would have served everyone's best interests. Obviously, from the reviews, I'm in the minority, so don't let me discourage you!

Ashley, I was also unable to reply through normal venues regarding Middlesex. I would highly recommend it. I thought it was an easy ready that was very engaging. I don't remember the size of the book because before I knew it, I was done and bummed out that it wasn't going to go on.

    Hi Ashley,
I received an email with two inquiries from you -- one about The Shipping News, the other about Middlesex. For some reason, I was able to click through with a recommendation re the Shipping News, but it wouldn't work for Middlesex, so I'm writing to you this way to recommend this book. Middlesex is a masterwork of American fiction. Detroit, MI becomes a kind of character in this novel and, if you know Detroit, you will recognize so much that is there and, if you were as old as I, you would remember the social, political and economic transitions that are important to the movement of this '50's, '60's story and to the history of this important City. It is a book about gender identity, but that seems to say almost nothing about its power and depth. I do hope you'll read it. It's a fat book and will take time, but it's worth every minute.
    Best, Alice Olson
