“I love this as a children's book for a couple of reasons: the world O'Brien creates for us and the morals presented through it. The picture created by O'Brien's writing is rich and charming. I somehow found myself able to relate to this world despite the stark contrast with my own. Through the stories and memoirs told by the rat, Nicodemus, and the adventures that take place thereafter, I get a strong sense of emphasis on living virtuously, fairly. It is something that we should all strive for and I love seeing such complex topics in children's books.
That being said, I did feel that the characters, especially the main character, Mrs. Frisby, were difficult to relate to. This made the beginning of the book somewhat tough to get through. The end of the book left me disappointed, I'm sad to report. Looking back, the storyline seemed to be rushed and the ending was not as well tied up as I would have liked.”
