Danilo Stern-Sapad

I have a great affinity for all genres of speculative fiction. For more about me see my personal site at Ariadoss.com

I also read an exceedingly large amount of non-fiction but I'll spare you my recommendations aside from a select few that aren't related to marketing, programming, web design, and self-help, which make up the bulk of my... more »

I thought this book flowed a lot better than the first. Herbert's style improved. Much easier read.

This book is wayyy too long. It was hard for me to stay interested even though he does throw a lot of incest at you. But eventually the shock value of repeated incest wears off. Heinlein should of found other taboos to break instead of breaking the same taboo in every way he could think of.

Starts off a little slow but finishes solid.

I did not realize Nabokov's true genius until I let this book sink in for a while. I found the the greater part of the book mildly disturbing and the main character a little bit scary in the sense you weren't quite sure what he was capable of. I somehow manages to read this book from end to end despite it pushing my comfort zone. However, toward the very end I almost didn't finish and I almost forgot about the book entirely. Then reflecting on this some months later I realized that as Lolita got older the main character lost interest in her and so did I and that why the book was so hard to finish. Very few authors are able to get you this emotionally involved in a book. It's one of the reasons I love Robert A. Heinlein.

I don't get jealous very often but I sure wish I could write like this!

The ending is what sold me. Overall, very solid story-telling.

Is it just me or does it look like there's a bunch of sperm on the book cover?

A Canticle for Liebowitz is a very clever book with some really powerful dialogue, descriptions, and an awesome setting. This collection of short stories is more entertaining though and still has a similar depth to it. I think it's harder to write in the short form and still provoke strong emotions.

Stephen King said it best, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people. . . . The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."

But if you want my personal opinion there are 5 major problems with this book:
    1. Very poor diction.
    2. Lousy characterization.
    3. The plot and subplots move way too slowly.
    4. The narrator is fixated on Edward's looks.
    5. The narrator and Edward fall in love for no apparent reason.
