  • The Gunslinger
    • Rated 3 stars

I first read the Gunslinger in middle school and have re-read it twice since. Stephen King is an excellent story teller beyond his normal genre. It starts out a pure western, the bad guy even wears black, and only a few horror elements are in the later part of the book. The story is captivating through a good use of language and pace. Since it is the starting of a much larger story this book feels simple and fairly light to read.
The main character I saw as a one dimensional character, mostly because he was so focused one goal, any growth he may have had was suffocated by his drive to get the man in black. The other characters in the book felt more rounded and believable in how they acted which for some reason doesn’t make me think any less of Roland. It can stand on its own even though its part of a series which I always like.

  • The Devil Wears Prada

Occasionally I will pick up a book at random to read. The Devil wears Prada was one of those books and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a light read that’s entertaining most of the time and in the end heartwarming. The main characters have set attitudes without seeming flat and the more ridiculous bits of story don’t seem out of place. It isn’t something I thought I would enjoy as much as I did. If you liked the movie I would definitely suggest this book.

  • New Moon

New Moon is my least favorite of the Twilight saga. It just fails, Bella is still a static character, there is no plot for the book, and it feels like a bridge and one that could have just been extra chapters in the next book. The only good thing about it is Jacob who has some depth. If you haven’t read this already just wait for the movie if you can I’m sure it will be a better story and tell you the basics of the book.

  • A Game of Thrones
    • Rated 3 stars

Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy story with plot lines that could have easily been taken from world history. The story is interesting to read even if the larger arcs feel like they’re just setting things up for another book. Most of the characters are believable even if not all of them are likable. The only reason I didn’t really enjoy the book is that the tensions that build up through out the book are never lightened; they change from one person to the other but never ease up completely. Changing from one person to another gives the story another realistic quality, not everyone knows what’s going on at any given place, it was still a bit frustrating though.
I realize this is the first part of a series which explains all the loose ends and the less then satisfying end. I’ll probably continue reading if only to see how it all turns out.

I read this for work and was surprised. As a young adult romance its middling. The story feels cliched, but Meyer creates a world that's easy to fantasize about making it perfect for escapism. The pacing was good in that I always felt that something interesting was about to happen, but her writing was so repetitive it took over 400 pages to get there. The repetition also killed any growth the characters may have had, like when something is moving so slowly you don't notice. My biggest problem though is that there are some parts so unrealistic that I couldn't suspend disbelief long enough to keep with the story. Despite all that I would recommend this book to most people, either to understand what the big deal is, or because sometimes reading a fluffy unrealistic romance is therapeutic.

  • Prospero Lost
    • Rated 3 stars

This is the first of a fantasy series. The story is a kind of sequel to Shakespeare’s the Tempest, following Prospero’s daughter Miranda. It takes place in modern times but has many flashbacks once the main conflict is set in place to give the reader details and to create a richer character in Miranda as she searches for her siblings and her father.
As a whole I liked the book and thought it was well put together, for not being a stand alone book. My favorite character is Mephistopheles who acts almost as a foil to his sister and is given his own mystery. It seems like that anyway, since the story is told from Miranda’s point of view and she’s focused on other problems. The idea of the book is one that is fun to think about and interesting to read. This has the potential to be an excellent series.

This was a fun book to read especially since I found it shortly after finishing the Inferno. It might also make a good introduction for someone that would be reluctant to read Inferno.

Usually I think of zombies as a movie monster but this story brings them to the page in a way that is realistic and horrific.
