My award-winning short story "All Hallows Eve in the Shrine of Dead Celebrities" was published in the Winter 2008 issue of Rosebud. I am currently working on a coming-of-age crime novel, and a few weird short stories.

    Hi!

I am familiar with Scott Lynch's work, and I would say there is very little resemblance. Goblin Moon is more like a combination of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and the old-fashioned historical adventure novel. But shorter, and with more magic.

    Hi Aric,

Thought you might find the following of interest-

Came across this on the internet-

“Brought to you by the people who occupy wall street.

“We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we're working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.”

I hope you stick it out here this time -modulating- or whatever ever you call it. Goodreads is so complicated that one would have to live in it full time for years to be able to navigate. It is a bit like the London Underground, you travel miles, pop your head up lost, and not realise you are only either 200 yards from where you started, or else in some exotic sub-clause in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Hi, Apok. My best answer to your question is in the video I've posted on my Amazon author page (also on my website and on YouTube). I sort of went crazy on the research; I found the period and the real characters so fascinating that I read everything I could find, in all the languages I can read (only three, unfortunately — neither Greek nor Turkish). I think I was able to read almost everything relevant (in English, French or Spanish) because I focused narrowly on just a few months of history, from mid 1402 to end of 1403, when the nascent Ottoman Empire was suddenly smashed to pieces (for a short but critical period). The subject was completely new to me — all my previous books had been about Latin America. But I had learned to do research. I joined an e-forum of scholars on Turkey and another one for Byzantinists, and I was so obsessive in searching through the New York Public Library and the very good collection in the New York University library that there came a point where those scholars were asking me questions. I even discovered a pencil-written manuscript in the NYPL archives, on a 15th century Turkish poetess, and passed that on to a literary journal in Ankara that used it for its inaugural issue. There were times when I thought my whole project was insane and I put it aside for moths at a time, but the research was fun and put me in contact with lots of intelligent people. And I'm so stubborn that I kept working on the prose until I got it right, at least as far as I could tell.
Thanks very much for your interest.

A generous sprinkling of poetry adds a kind of genuine flavor to any book. What do you think?

Thanks for your careful and sensitive moderation; it's a thankless task. I left the group but decided to come back and just ignore the nonsense that goes on. It's a shame though.

    Hi Aric
This isn’t hard to understand. When sent you this note
    JackBobDavid ***Living the Dream*** says
That Nee character is still going around cussing me as some troll, and I'm cool as skool about it, but this link from yesterday shows she is informing new members to beware of me, and so that would include any advice I give - is that fair?

    http://www.shelfari.com/annelisemonte

Check Nee's note to them, I'll quote some of it now:

"Beware that bobdave whatever 'livin’ in his own dream' dude…he is a troll. The first that I’ve seen in this group.

In the last month or so there have been some new people who are talking as if they know about writing but, when you look into them, they are merely narcissistic fools and/or self-published hacks."
---There is a bit deleted here---
ps I wouldn't mind so much, but they're not even an admin (which they are acting like.)”

See…what I think is that last bit, was what got you to act.
Even though I was talking to someone OFF the WR’s group
You sent me this email explaining exactly why you were kicking me off:

    “Hello Nee,
A personal message has been sent to you by apokalypsis.
    Nee--

I am sorry to see you have been posting notes on people's shelves referring to JackBobDavid as a troll. (cf. http://www.shelfari.com/annelisemonte) That's never okay in my book; people should be able to decide for themselves whose opinion and 'style' to value. I've been forced to kick you out of the Writing Readers group. I thought you had some good things to say, but the on-going sarcasm and personal disputes have no place in that forum.

    --Aric (aka apokalypsis)”

You have no authority to tell people what they can talk to each other about off the WR’s group.
    By saying this:
“I am sorry to see you have been posting notes on people's shelves referring to JackBobDavid as a troll”
and acting upon it, you overstepped your authority—and in America, you infringed on my free speech rights. Which is actionable.

By the way the other’s from the ‘Poems that don’t Rhyme’ group (the sock puppets) talked about me in their notes to one another also. But, did I whine to you about that?

And when you say," And they did not follow him from another group just to defend him."

What an interesting presupposition. But I agree, the other reason they followed him here was for entertainment.

I have done everything within my power to support writers and the publishing industry, as well as to promote works of literature I felt people would like to read and—more importantly—buy for themselves or for others. Have you seen JackBobDavid doing the same? When asked about the very subject he said, there was nothing worth reading—or more importantly—buying.

You asked, “So what would you like to see as the resolution to this issue?” Which is odd seeing how you acted. Most would think that was a resolution.

So now let me ask a question:
How do you think Shelfari makes its money?

You allowed people to disrupt the exchange of ideas and information with inflammatory utterances and psychotic drivel, and when I call them out for their disruptive behavior—because YOU DID NOTHING—this is how you restore equilibrium…? Messages between users are a normal function of these groups, and YOU have nothing to say about what goes on there. The only complaints you got were form people who are new to the RW’s group and were from another group that decided to “INVADE” the RW’s group. That is a well-documented “Troll” technique.

By the way, sarcasm falls well within freedom of speech rights.

I see the "Troll" is disappointed that his fun ended so soon.

Get the feeling like you are being played yet?

That is so funny that you suggested The Sparrow--a colleague was just telling me about it yesterday!! I am off to adding it to my reading list. Have you read Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card? That is a favorite of mine...

Thanks so much! I can definitely check in after the project. I don't have to write a thesis, so there won't be anything as formal as that. I'd be happy to share my results, though.
    Thanks again!
