Anna, we should start a book war against each other!
Anna! I just saw your message now by chance. But here's my reply:1. Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi (also translated as If This is a Man)-- Honestly, this is the best holocaust memoir I've ever read. It's also profoundly disturbing. 2. In My Hands by Irene Gut Opdyke--Memoir of a German nurse who helps hide Jews3. Night by Elie Wiesel-- Haven't read it, but it's supposed to be a classic4. Diary of Anne Frank-- obviously5. Rudolf Hoess's memoirs--I've read most of this and it seems worthwhile. Technically, these are not the memoirs of a victim but of the victimizer. Hoess was the head commander of Auschwitz and his memoirs are a disturbing example of self-delusion and megalomania. His case also kind of supports Arendt's thesis about the 'banality' of evil, since this guy seems to be a fairly ordinary guy despite being utterly evil.
