“If there's anything indelible that I took away after reading What is the What is how vulnerable and susceptible our personal lives and our countries are to destruction. I understood that it could be fine with you, your life could be near perfect and all you need is one self-righteous person to turn everything upside down. It's happening or happened all over the world e,g. Sudan, Rwanda, Somalia, even America in some sense with the current economic woes it's experiencing. I found the language simple and engaging. Although I found the style adopted by the writer at times tiresome, with the protagonist addressing other characters through which he told his story. Maybe I was impatient with the plot and was just eager to know how he fared through his trials. But it was very interesting. I found Valentino Achak Deng, the protagonist, inspiring and brave and intelligent and at some point, surreal. Now he is a real success story, to survive hunger, being eaten by lions, the rebels who wanted to recruit him and the horrible conditions he lived in. The story did sound unbelievable at some points. It was hard to believe that the protagonist could recall every conversation he had ever had with people. I recommend that everyone read this book.”
