A tad over-rated. Anyone who has read widely will know from where Coelho drew inspiration and material for The Alchemist. A book for those who do not read much and when they do, expect little. Most favorable reviews hail its message -- you have a purpose -- failing to note this message is to be found in so many better-written, interesting and compelling books. Maktub, indeed, but many others and far better.

Obtuse, archaic, and yet entertaining and revelatory.

Four narratives of emigrants who hour by hour, day by day, slowly lose the qualities that brand them individual and become abstractions. W.G. Sebald, who sadly passed away five years ago, is a brilliant writer whose work focuses on memory, loss an identity. Any Sebald will be a delight.

Every once in a while I choose a book as my tag-a-long; every where I go, it goes too.
I found The Story of Art just before the end of last year and have it had since in my travels around town and have found it to be a wonderful surprise.
In another life, or parallel universe, I am an art critic and in this one a terrible painter and so I find great solace in this volume -- it's a fantastic survey of art's place in our lives, our souls and how it's everywhere we go.
The prose is straight forward, jargon-less, and phlanges up quite superbly with full color plates of annotated art in the back. A treasure to tag-a-long.

As a progressive, I think it is important to understand alternatives. Ayn Rand's book gives me (I am still 300 some pages left to read mind you!) insight into a worldview I do not share, to be sure, but it gives me insight into my fellow human beings in order that I can understand them better and be better prepared to changed their minds.
As a writer, I find the prose very interesting in its utility, but mostly in Rand's ability to describe conflicting emotions within a character. She is the master of dueling characters...
    Who is John Galt?
