I've been reading the books for years so when I first started watching the show, all I could think was 'that's not right,' or 'they didn't actually do that'. Its hard to actually separate the books from the show and I have to say that I do enjoy the books more. Not to say that I didn't eventually begin to also enjoy the show, I just prefer the characterization in the books.
I've never tried Mary Janice Davidson. Is that a comedy or romance series? Or both? There is an order to the Kim Harrison books. If you look on Amazon, it lists them by number. Maybe that'll help. You definitely do need to read those books in order to understand anything.
Kelley Armstrong does more with werewolves. I've only read the first book, Bitten, but I really enjoyed it. Rob Thurman writes a series about two brothers. One human (Niko) and the other half monster (Cal). The first book, Nightlife, is them trying to evade the monster family and find out why they're after Cal. I thought it was very good.
If you are interested in trying new authors, I can always be shameless and suggest myself. My book is called Midnight Reflections and deals with a woman trying to adjust after being turned into a vampire against her will. And if that isn't enough, she becomes involved in an investigation into a supernatural serial killer.
