I have loved to read since I was a little girl. We didn't have television but we had lots of books, magazines, newspapers. Each month my mother and I would go to a larger town to do the banking and major shopping. We had two treats each month. We went out to lunch together and we each bought a book. I loved the Bobbsey Twins (probably... more »

I loved this book so much I read it through twice in a row. It made me very sorry that I was not able to go to Finland with my mother in 1970. It made me realize how homesick both my grandmother and mother must have been at times. I've always appreciated that they took the chance and immigrated to America to give their decendents a better life; but I never realized all they gave up to do so. Finland is so full of culture and traditions and the lifestyle in the late 1960's (when this book was written) would have made it hard for me to come back to America.

I read this book the second time last night and enjoyed it even more. Part of the reason I enjoyed it so much is that it gave me a sense of my father's life. He would be close to 116 years old if he would be alive now and was a lumberjack in his early years. These men worked very hard and in such cold weather. We have no clue as to what hard work is.
I like William Durbin's books as they have women who are strong real people...women who have "sisu". Although there were very few women in this book, the ones that were portrayed had character and personality. He evidentally has respect and affection for the women in his life.

Someone loaned me this book and I set it aside thinking it was not going to be very interesting. However, one evening I decided to try it and stayed up until 4:30 am reading (I had to get up at 6:30 and get ready for a full day at work). Thanks to quite a bit of green tea and coffee I did just fine but am getting too old for something like this anymore.
Needless to say; once you start this story of Joseph it is hard to put the book down. You learn much about the political system of ancient Egypt. I thought it would be hard to keep track of the characters as their names were so unfamilar but the author made them so real that it was not a problem. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes and enjoys reading.

As a person who has a Finnish heritage; these books are very interesting. Although, they are written for young adults, they are well written and entertaining as well as giving me a glimpse into the world that my parents grew up in; even if they did not live on "the range" in northern Minnesota. There are many other similar experiences that the new and/or first generation Finnish Americans experienced. Plus it is a good story.

Although this is a book for younger readers; it is so well written that adults will enjoy it as well. It is of special interest to people of Finnish background and illustrates "sisu" which Finnish people use to describe that character trait and inner strength which overcomes what seems to be impossible obstacles. It is a piece of history that is important not just to people of a Finnish background but can teach us all some important truths about how precious our democracy is.

Although this book starts slow; I have always been glad I made it through the first few chapters because this is a book I read every 10 years and enjoy it very much. It is like actually living in a time period that spans a 100 years and being a part of the changes..like from horse and buggy to automobile. It makes one realize there are some blessings as we age, a more philosophical view of life and that we can move past pain and into peace.

I liked this book as it showed the power of friendship to enable women to change, grow and cope with circumstances in their lives. Women can truely understand each other. I think, that they think and reason a bit differently then men:) If they care about each other they can be one of the most valuable assests a woman can have.

I did not care for this book as it was depressing to me...but it was a good set-up for the following books in the series. I enjoyed the series as it showed the main character developing from an abused/shattered woman to a woman who becomes healthier and happier throughout the series. However, it is a great mystery series (even this first book) and the recipes sound yummy...but could cause one to gain weight just by reading them:)!

I enjoyed this series although it is a bit more "laid back" then other mystery series that I have read. Reading this is like escaping into a slower pace of life and just enjoying the people around you while you think through some situations.
