I have loved to read since I was a little girl. We didn't have television but we had lots of books, magazines, newspapers. Each month my mother and I would go to a larger town to do the banking and major shopping. We had two treats each month. We went out to lunch together and we each bought a book. I loved the Bobbsey Twins (probably because I was much younger then my siblings and almost like an "only" child) and she would usually get herself an Agatha Christie mystery.
My dream home has always been one with a library full of books. Like the one in Beauty and the Beast that the Beast shares with Belle. When I was busy raising my children; somedays I would think a day in a hotel by myself with stacks of books and an indoor swimming pool would have been fantastic. I thought the character Elizabeth Taylor plays in Giant had a fantastic idea. She moved her huge bed in the center of the room to have better light and was surrounded by stacks of books.
I used to love reading to my children as well, especially in the car. I read while my husband drove. We went to Florida once and we read all the way there and back. Sometimes my husband would drive around the block a few times so we could finish a chaper.
Most of my grandchildren love to be read to as well. I have a son who read to his oldest daughter before she was born and he swears that was her favorite book when she was a toddler. My daughter read stories to her son before he was born as well. He is almost 2 and brings his favorite book along to my house so I can read it to him.
My mother's love of reading has been passed down to the 3rd generation. What a great gift she gave us.
