I have loved to read since I was a little girl. We didn't have television but we had lots of books, magazines, newspapers. Each month my mother and I would go to a larger town to do the banking and major shopping. We had two treats each month. We went out to lunch together and we each bought a book. I loved the Bobbsey Twins (probably... more »

I read Song of Sampo Lake and said that all my nieces and nephews have to read it to get a taste of their Finnish Heritage. I had lunch with the author when he came to Sebeka schools several years ago and he is so careful about his research. The Minnesota Finns have embraced him and spent a lot of time with him. He has a new one called Winter War which is about the Soviets invading Finland. He spoke at a conference I went to last fall about this book and detailed how one person would send to to another person for details and information about this war as he was researching and writing.

I had read "Sampo Lake" a few years ago. It was such a wonderful read that gave one such a great sense of where one came from and the hardships endured by our grandparents, and great grandparents coming from Finland. I gave this book to a co-worker of mine who was born and raised in So. California, and had no idea about the imigrant life in Minnesota. She loved it and it gave her some great insight into another culture and a way of life for the Finnish Imigrant. It made for a great understanding across cultures! I think I will read the other books by this author that you have on your page as well. Thanks for adding them!

Happy Summer! When I get the stack of books done, including the series you gave me, I will check out your sight for more good reads. I tend to DO more than Read. My reading ends up being kids books with or for them. Hope to see you this summer.

I did enjoy the Ladies of the Club. Although when I started it I wasn't sure I would. But i like long books that give you a chance to really follow the characters thru time.

Do you think one could enjoy Home to Holly Springs without reading the Mitford series? I am reading it again with that in mind and do believe it is a book that could be enjoyed on its own.

    Pat,
I think you will enjoy this book from my shelf a great deal! It is quite touching, and has so many insights that I can't even begin to mention them all. She is also a Minnesota author who lives on the North Shore. -Ken-

Just taking a look at the new Shelfari. I haven't used it for awhile. I have a stack of books 4 feet high by my bedside....mostly kids books...but I have been reading books from our church library too. Your books are many of the same ones I like! Thank you for posting the story about you and grandma. I think I may have to print it and put it into my scrapbook! If only I could get more stories like this. Do you have any idea of how to harness these memories and put them down in writing? Diane

Hi, I discovered you are using Shelfari! I love this site. It lets me remember what books I have read! I have a bookcase without having to dust it.
