    Fairly hackneyed.

An enchanting book, but beware the five sequels--all forced, stilted, and disappointing.

Slow in the beginning, but a very satisfying ending.

The thing I most like about this book is its discussion of casual relationships with people. I'm studying China at the moment and, once I learned about the Cultural Revolution, I didn't want to have every book go on and on about it. Many do.

This one neither pretends it didn't happen nor dwells on it. Mostly, it's about the author's experiences getting to know people during his two years as a Peace Corps teacher there.

The book is written in a fairly dry style. It gives an account of the social/political climate of China without much attention to the individual lives of the women--their fears, hopes, or feelings. Possibly times were so bad, conditions beyond their control occupied all their attention.

I found it fairly typical of nonfiction about China during the period covered. It seems to be a difficult place to live. Difficult to read about, too.

"China--People, Place, Culture, History" by Bailey, Knapp, and Neville-Hadley was more interesting to me because it dealt with issues other than political and gender oppression.

Beautiful and fascinating. It's partly an atlas, partly a detailed look at the regions and people of China.

My husband and I read aloud together. Usually, it's great. Sigh. He picked this book and likes it. I think it's boring and badly written.

The evil characters are so CARDBOARD. Supposedly, one of the good characters accidentally conjured them up out of a book. If so, that book was badly written, too!

We're only about half through, but as far as I'm concerned, the book is irredeemable. I cannot wait for this one to be over.

Further note: We didn't finish this book--rare for us. It was just too bad to bother finishing.

The book began well, but quickly deteriorated. The characters were cardboard, and, after the first chapter, the book was trite and boring. Too much repetition about abuse and sexuality, as if that's all it took to make a story. An absolute waste of money.
