I really wanted to like this - I liked "House of the Scorpion" which has the same premise, but a way more engaging plot. I felt like this was a short story that was fleshed out into book form, and not very successfully. This was one of those books where you want to dive into the book, grab the characters by the shoulders and scream "Get with it already!" While perhaps the point of the story is that they are just plodding along with the status quo, I just couldn't take it. It was like some art-house film that you feel like you have to tell your friends that you liked so that they will think you're deep.
Get "House of the Scorpion" instead.

At first I was skeptical that I would be engaged in the plot - I had seen the movie trailers and thought it looked cheesy. It's pretty darn good, actually. Very scary, very readable - a great summer page-turner.

I couldn't make it through this - which is rare for me. It's about carnival freak show workers that begat carnival freakshow workers. Way too wierd for me!

I just finished this and it's outstanding. If you liked "everything is illuminated, check this out"
