I live and work in the UK, and write gay crime and fantasy novels, the latest being "The Gifting" (fantasy). When the wind is in the right direction, I also write poetry! I love quirky dark books and those that don't fit into the mainstream genres. My website is at http://annebrooke.com and I regularly blog at http://annebrooke.blogspot.com. And... more »

This was a fantastic story - poetic, lyrical and rich. And very different from the norm. I totally loved it - more please.

This is a powerful and gripping read, steeped in rough masculinity and dark eroticism. I loved it. The world-building was superb and I particularly appreciated the way the plot twists and turns with each subtle revelation. The growth of the main character was particularly good and I was with him all the way.

I dearly hope there'll be a sequel as I feel there is much more to tell.

3.5 stars. First half quite dull and second half very good really - worth reading just for that!

This is a superbly dark and gripping novel, contrasting one teenager's forced life on the game with his sister's desperate attempts to save him. I loved it.

These three separate stories about neighbours Johnny and Miriam growing up in the 1960s and 70s make for a moving and elegant novella. I very much enjoyed the directness and strength of the prose which has its own bleak beauty, and the push and pull of relationships and family was very well portrayed indeed. The ending is perfect too. Highly recommended.

This is a perfect lyrical romance with a lot of power and passion within it. As ever with Watts, the language is poetic and moving, and very much suits the magical fantasy genre she writes in here. Elynas, the king with much to hide, is the perfect foil for the lost knight Melior, and a gripping protagonist in this fascinating short story.

Mediocre and pretentious, with three nasty main characters, unfortunately. It was a relief to finish. However, the writing does have potential.

Dull and way too wordy, though there were one or two really good poems hidden in the mix - they should have been given a much better chance to breathe. Actually by the time I'd finished the collection I really hated the woman he wrote it for, I have to say, so obviously that aspect of it didn't work for me, as surely she can't have been that irritating!

If you want top-class poetry of grief, then you're much better off with Hardy.

This is the dullest poetry book I've ever read. Too wordy with no content and ultimately very empty.
