I buy far too many books and read for several hours every day, mostly English literature (I have an MA in English lit), but also world literature, science-for-the-mathematically-challenged, archaeology, history, philosphy and travel. I love long distance running (hoping to run my 4th marathon this or next year), listening to classical music,...more »

Hi. I have just started reading Oscar and Lucinda. I have a very basic question for you.
Oscar's father....is he Bible hating? or is he pagan hating?.....point is....i have reached the point where he saw the symbols that Oscar makes and critisizes them...so he is a pagan hater...on the other hand he has taken people away from the church....so that makes him a church hater.....also he is against christmas....
so Please clear this up for me......does he not like pagans or does he not like christianity??
    thanks

Hi thank you for your message, unfortunely I would be running the marathon, the plans fell apart at the last minute. I do plan on running the Portland Marathon. This Saturday I will be doing a 5K race. The race is before a parade I will be running with some middle school students that I helped train for the run, I am looking forward to it. I've been running with some of these kids the last three years so it both exciting and sad since this will be the last year I'll help in there training

As I haven't been logging in for a while, I've only just seen your comment on my review of Memoirs of Hadrian. I didn't want you to think I was rude or deliberately ignoring you, so this is just to say hi and thank you.

I see you've listed Crime & Punishment among your favourites, too. I commend you for that; personally, I've never been able to finish it.

Hello Anna, thank you for your offer of friendship, a nice way to start the work week. The marathon I hope to run in on May 31st in Newport, Oregon, a small town on the Oregon coast. Then I hope to run the Portland marathon in late Septmeber or early October. The Portland marathon is great, lots of runners and the city is very supportive. I work as paralegal specialist for the Department of Veteran Affairs, so we have a legal background or work in common. I love the people I work with and my supervisor is very supportive of my community volunteer work which includes working at a local middle school. I help out two days a week in a science class and American history class plus help with there running club. I discovered last year a way to reward and motivate the students was to give them books. I was so happy to see that most of them loved getting a book. By the way Moby Dick is very popular with the boys which is nice.

I'm glad you liked Anchorage. It is a gorgeous region, as is the rest of Alaska. I once had the privilege of living in Kotzebue, which is on Alaska's northwest coat. I was reading Moby Dick while I was there--the perfect setting to read Melville.

I've visited the Netherlands and celebrated New Years 1996 in Amsterdam. It's one of my favorite places to go. Best wishes!

Great shelf! Reminds me that I need to add more of the classics to mine.
