adoringly gruesome; grimly's illustrations take the edge off, if not enhance and highlight poe's prose. a great read for both children and adults. but purist poe fans won't be very happy, as the art, while amusing, has a tendency to "trivialize" the macabre in the classic stories.

this novel tackles autism through a 12-year-old's perspective. overall it is a light-hearted, realistic and touching depiction of every day in the life of a family who has a member with special needs. the plot is simple, the writing unburdened. i can almost perfectly picture what all the characters see, think and feel.

The prose reads well, as expected of Gaiman, and the characters are all interesting, not at all creepy (as "graveyard" would suggest)--specially Nobody Owens and Silas. It's a perfect homage to Kipling, Gaiman style. The wit, humor and suspense are comfortable, making this book a very easy read. I have both UK and US editions and I think Chris Riddell's illustrations (UK ed) are better suited to the story. (Also, this book actually saved me from drowning in "Twilight" fluff.)
