NEONLIGHTS
Concrete walls barely showed the secrets held,
Staying the sore afterglow.
By 5 we are of the same single whole.
By 8, we dissolve in twos, in threes, in fours.
We drive the cars and we walk the streets
Beneath lamps that glow tired gray
Always the same, never knowing the silence we keep.
The wind cuts deep into our souls
Like amphetamine drive-bys and metal hooks
Sending sweet music across torn pavement’s whole.
We climb the high towers afraid to fall,
Feeding on grace long gone.
The restful, however, do not approve,
They are bare with lesser longing.
Loving the unsure, aging like cicada sons
Latched to doors that never were.
However there are times when we miss,
The tear that rips the parchment dead
Unable to forget the tasteless replay of all that’s been.
But no matter, for all I know,
The line was touched a long time ago before the rain washed our cities.
It is true, everyday we kiss the flies good night
Stealing the seconds for our own
While bus-rides stink of acid burned
Taking us nowhere near and nowhere far,
Stranded between avenues
That breathe with shame,
As we are lead astray to our Mondays…
