“If it is his best book, as many have said, it is his best worst book. For some reason, he decided to betray the "personal matter" for a (not so) higher goal at the end. I find it hard to even rate it because it was brilliantly written but the last two pages were somewhere between useless and highly disappointing.”

“Tried to read it, but couldn't. The story behind the book is infinitely more interesting. Anne Desclos wrote it just to prove Jean Paulhan, her lover and employer (writer, literary critic and publisher) that a woman can write an erotic novel. "Worth reading" - the poor man implied. But Anne Desclos is anything but subtle. ”
