Hi! Nice to meet you (for those who already know me, welcome to my on-line library) :-)

We all have different reasons why we read - it might be for learning, relaxing, inspiration or just for fun. I find Shelfari a good way to share my impressions on the books that I read and discover new stuff from others.

  • The Steve Jobs Way
    • Rated 5 stars

I believe in terms of product development, Steve Jobs resembles a brilliant gardner sitting in front of a piece of dry land and ceasing its potential: drafting and building the architectural landscape as it goes, employing the best people for the work, planting and making the most of the highest quality seeds (= technical innovations), using the best fertilizers (=motivation). And along the entire process, always having the vision of the final mesmerizing experience that product could offer to the people around = the end consumers.

The Decision Book: Fifty Models for Strategic Thinking

    by Roman Tschäppeler, Mikael Krogerus
    • Rated 4 stars

A handy book to go through whenever you are not sure how to get around a set an information and make a decision. It represents a compendium of strategic thinking models, that can be useful to whatever decision dilemma one might face, from everyday projects to learning from mistakes or turning a group into a team. Nice structure grouping facilitates your coming back to a certain model pending on your needs: self improvement, understanding yourself, understanding others and improving others. However, to quote the book, "Each model is only as good as the person who uses it."

  • Die Klügere gibt nicht mehr nach. Frauen sind einfach besser.
    • Rated 3 stars

Found it rather feminist in approach. But I don't think that hurts taking into consideration the fact that in 21st century, women still feel sometimes that they can not compete with men on similar grounds (i've recently noticed at job interviews young men "sell" themselves better than young women, though nothing of their knowledge or experience qualifies them for that). So i guess it's a good read for young women looking to shape their future and build self confidence.

Strange at the beginning, but once you finish the 1st story you get the taste of where Kundera is aiming at with this book; it's a fan with different pieces of foray into human psychic, all tied together by one common leit motif - the basic sexual needs fulfillment, having different origination or motivations pending on character analyzed.

Difficult to say what I think about the book. It's more of a compendium of psychological studies / stories on "thin slicing"; in the end, unfortunatelly, there was no clear take away I could extract because snap judgement can work both ways, for the good or for the bad, based on your experience&knowledge of the subject you interpret.

Ambiguity can be intriguing, but not revealing anything in the end, is a little bit annoying for my taste.

This is the first time I read chick literature - I was on vacation, so something light and frivolous fit well. Loved the nanny character, brought me a good laugh :-) Otherwise, quite predictable...

Truly loved it! Pure honest pieces of advice on self development: your innermost feelings are the one to provide you with answers, don't search for them outside, from others. My favorites were #4 & #8.

"If you trust in Nature, in what is simple in Nature, in the small Things that hardly anyone sees and that can so suddenly become huge, immeasurable; if you have this love for what is humble and try very simply, as someone who serves, to win the confidence of what seems poor: then everything will become easier for you, more coherent and somehow more reconciling, not in your conscious mind perhaps, which stays behind, astonished, but in your innermost awareness, awakeness, and knowledge. • The Science of Happiness
    • Rated 4 stars

I've always thought that whatever we feel originates in the mind, it comes from the inside to the outside. Well, apparently, all our emotions reside in our so called "reptile" brain, which has control over involuntary nervous system - this is why, emotions are connected to the body, and the mind & feelings only intervene once we become aware of our emotions.

Although it seems that our brain is so programmed to be more sensitive to the negative feelings, we do however own enough resources (biological, spiritual) that enable us to pass over them and be happy.

An active life is the secret of happiness and fulfillment (as Aristotel said). We have the freedom to change the way we perceive a situation and, moreover, we can use positive feelings to fight against negative ones.
