For as long as I can remember, I have devoured books. I've read a lot of books that I don't remember well enough to catalog here, and I've only included books on my shelf that have impacted my life in some way. The books on my shelf are here because I've befriended the characters, or found teachers in authors, because I have learned something... more »

Sorry, for such the delay. The Dance of the Dissident Daughter is an incredible book! I've given this book to all my female friends and family to read. I highly recommend it! This is the journey Sue Monk Kidd takes before she started writing fiction. Her and her daughter are currently working on a travel memoir as well. It is supposed to be about their excursions to ancient goddess related sites. It is slated to be out some time next year!!

Thank you so much for sending me those books! I started The Red Tent and it rocks. It's one of those that I can't put down - not because it's suspenseful, but because it's so interesting. Thanks again!!

I really like all of the books by that author. Grandpa gave them to Dad years ago. I think that one is the only one still in print. Good stories, good writing, humor. "Journey to Matecumbe" is the one I really liked but I don't think I found it here.

It was going to make me crazy unless I looked it up -- the Native American narrative I was telling you about tonight -- it's called A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson. Ok, no longer going crazy. :)

    Andrea,
I'm having fun updating my list. It has made me think about some of my favorite books. A lot of them are on your list but maybe you will find some you haven't read yet.

Shipping News is Maine winter; you need the grittyness of an Arctic winter--little light, intensely cold and above all else, inextricably long. Your picture makes you look as if you live somewhere warm, and your Southern lit suggests as much (though I suppose mine does too)...

and for the record, I disappear from Alaska for part of the summer, but I have the distinct priveledge of living here when most seasonal workers do not.

You strike me as the sort of person who might like
"This Cold Heaven: Seven Seasons in Greenland" by Gretl Ehrlich, for a snowy book. I can formerly recommend it to you if you would like...

Cool shelf. Your Ecology of a Cracker Chilhood is what attracted me here...lots of good "southern" works.

Andrea, thanks for the invite. I'll work on getting my list together, but I'm so excited to get great ideas for books to read and to share ones I've enjoyed. I must admit most of my books are a little "fru fru" but I'll share anyhow. I haven't read it yet, but I recently watched the movie Freedom Writers and there is a book written by the real class and teacher on which the movie was based off of, called "Freedom Writers Diary" and it looks really cool since the movie was truly moving.

Yes, 1984 is my favorite book of all time. It's just one of those that I think about and relate things to all the time. Although, my game show favorite book is The Princess Bride, which is actually my second favorite book (and it's my game show favorite movie - easy for Chill to remember!). That's just in case Chill and I are on one of those on-the-street type game shows where they ask you questions about your mate to see how well you know them. We have it all worked out so we can get all the stupid questions right (we don't really have a lot to talk about so this is the kind of stuff we come up with).I don't know that I'll ever read Moby Dick, but if I have to for class I'll let you know. Thanks for inviting me to this - it rocks!! I finally have a place to get book suggestions!

Hi Andrea! I'm so glad you're enjoying _The Education of Little Tree_ -- I enjoyed it so much, for the same reason you seem to be. It is so simple, straightforward, and humbling to read. It definitely lifted me out of my everyday world and helped me to see things a little differently. See you Saturday!
