  • How I Play Golf
    • Rated 5 stars

As an avid golfer, I read Tiger's "How I Play Golf" from cover to cover. What is remarkable about the book is the clarity of Tiger's golf thought for someone of his relatively young age. The book is definitely recommended for every golfer. His comments helped me here and there in my own game and at age 62, I might add, I am the reigning men's champion at my golf culb. Anyone who thinks that Tiger wins just because he plays golf well, is mistaken. What he really excels at is mental toughness and stability. These are worth far more than just the pure golf shots.

Das Buch ist eine sehr einfache, aber dafür sehr nützliche Vorstellung und Beschreibung der "Symbole der Inka, Maya und Azteken". This book is a very simple, but therefore arlso very useful presentation and description in German of the symbols of the Inca, Maya and Aztecs.

  • Stonehenge Complete, Revised Edition
    • Rated 3 stars

A highly overrated book about Stonehenge which is by no means complete. We recommend instead, Stonehenge and its Barrows (written in 1876! by William Long), Stonehenge Decoded by Gerald S. Hawkins, Stonehenge by John North and Stars Stones and Scholars by Andis Kaulins, the present reviewer. All of these books are on our bookshelf.

  • Ägyptisches Wörterbuch 1. Altes Reich und Erste Zwischenzeit.
    • Rated 5 stars

This 1680-page Egyptian Dictionary for the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period by Rainer Hannig is the definitive work in this field. It is Volume 98 (Band 98) of the series Kulturgeschichte der Antiken Welt (Cultural Histrory of the Ancient World) by publisher Verlag Philipp von Zabern, Mainz am Rhein. The "table of contents", "synopsis", "preface", and "structure of the entry" in the book are given at the beginning in six languages: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian. HOWEVER, the readings of the hieroglyphs are given ONLY in German, so that non-German speakers also require a good German-English dictionary. Work is being done to translate the entire dictionary into English. The book is beautifully done and it is in my view a masterpiece of scholarship.

My laudatory comment about this dictionary should - nevertheless - not be misunderstood. I am using this dictionary as my basis for correcting erroneous transliteration and incorrect readings of Old Kingdom Pharaonic hieroglyphs, including the meanings assigned to them. Nevertheless, Hannig is my reference work for what "mainstream" Egyptologists holds to be correct transliteration and reading of the Pharaonic hieroglyphs.

  • Chronicle of the Pharaohs: The Reign-By-Reign Record of the Rulers and Dynasties of Ancient Egypt With 350 Illustrations 130 in Color (Chronicles S.)
    • Rated 5 stars

In my opinion, this is the best general book on the market about the Pharaonic Dynasties. The author, Peter Clayton, gives tours in Egypt and he knows his subject. I had the pleasure of meeting Clayton in the year 2008 in London at a conference, and he preceded me on the lecture podium. When my turn came to speak, I told the audience that it was a great honor to follow an author whose book not only graced my own library shelves, but was actually used quite regularly for my own writings about Ancient Egypt. The Chronicle Series of history books by Thames & Hudson are in my opinion among the very best history books in the publishing world. As written by Thames & Hudson (http://www.thamesandhudsonusa.com/series/chronicles.htm): "These reign-by-reign records of rulers and dynasties, from ancient Egypt to Tsarist Russia, include comprehensive timelines, datafiles, quotations, and stunning illustrations. Each book is both a highly readable popular history and a unique reference work." What I really like about the Chronicle Series is their mixture of a superb layout with educated text and enhancing graphics. Last but not least, this is an easily consulted reference volume to be consulted time and time again, and I do. I myself would one day like to put out a photographically illustrated book on the megaliths and it would, if possible, follow this delightful book format.

As written about "Hieroglyphic Writing" in this book"Maya hieroglyphs present the reader with a richness and visual elaboration unrivalled by any of the world's ancient scripts.... The discovery of the phonetic basis of hieroglyphic writing, largely the work of the Russian Yuri Knorosov, has proved the key to its decipherment." If you really want to learn about the Maya, start with this book. It is admittedly sometimes intellectually demanding reading, but in the end you will have a sound and fundamental knowledge of the Maya and be in a position to judge other, mostly lesser works in this field. What we really like about the Chronicle Series is their mixture of a superb layout with educated text and enhancing graphics. • The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt

I was greatly disappointed in this vastly over-rated book and its run-on opinionistic and conclusionary style of writing, which continues on interminably as if the writers knew the history of Egypt, whereas much is in fact simple conjecture. The book is devoid of any sensible detailed organization, being rather a collection of 15 essays by various personages covering various chronological periods of Pharaonic Egypt. We would rename this book, "Some rambling essays about the history of Egypt". NOT RECOMMENDED.
