"I love to read all kinds of things." I know a lot of people say that, but for me it isn't entirely about the genre or whether a book's about vampires or aliens, demons or dragons. My book choices are rather based on how much I like the author's style of writing and imagination; which often results in the liking of books which I typically... more »

Hi Anat, it's wonderful to hear from you again. I'm truly honoured to have been mentioned on your blog too so many thanks. I completely understand how busy you are Anat, as the career you've chosen entails a huge amount of dedication and committment. I don't know if I've ever told you how much I respect and proud I am of you for your achievements and how I pray that you succeed in all your goals. Just drop us a few lines whenever you can and that will be enough for me.

You know Anat you have such a wonderful knack for writing - if you hadn't already chosen such a worthwhile career, I think you would have made an amazing writer. I know you've mentioned before that you've penned a few short stories but I think you would have gone quite far. Perhaps it's something you might want to consider one day in the future.

Anyway you must let me know in your next note how your summer job researching lung infections panned out and what you are currently doing. Don't worry or feel guilty if you are late in replying to emails as I totally understand. Take care my friend.

Salaam to you my friend and Ramadan Mubarak to you too. I hope this month goes smoothly for you and your family and that your prayers are answered.

I'm so pleased for you that you have managed to get a job with one of your professors researching lung infections. It sounds so amazing and I can tell that you are enjoying it immensely. I genuinely wish you all the success in the future in your chosen career. It's not easy to find jobs in this country, especially for Asians. My son has been studying Electrical Installation for three years now but is struggling to find a placement with a company so he can gain his NVQ in an Advanced Apprenticeship. I hope he has some luck soon.

Your vacation in Snowdonia sounds absolutely wonderful. I felt I was there myself from your description and couldn't help smiling at some of your antics especially when wrote that you you 'badly injured your shoulder and knee after slipping off a rock and falling into the most sceneic river you've ever seen' all in one sentence. I could picture you sitting in a river and looking around in awe oblivious to your predicament.

You mentioned it's been your birthday recently so Happy Belated Birthday! Also a hearty congratulations for reading 13 books in one month. Thats not easy to achieve I know. Incidently, I bought both Shiver and Linger two weeks ago from Asda superstore so I will let you know when I start to read them both so we can compare notes. Thank you for the link which I will make a note of. I will look up the link after I finished reading them in case there are some spoilers as I don't want to ruin the suspence ok. I'm looking forward to asking your opinion on this series as I've heard some mixed views about these books.

I'm planning to read a couple of trilogies by L J Smith in the coming weeks after Ramadan. Have you heard of her Dark Visions trilogy and The Forbidden Games trilogy? I'm also planning to read Claudia Gray's Evernight series and Christopher Pike's The Last Vampire series afterwards. I shall squeeze Shiver and Linger in between I promise.

Anyway, take care Anat, happy fasting to you and if I don't hear from you before Eid then a very HAPPY Eid Mubarak. Bye!!

Hi Anat, it's always a pleasure to hear from you. I hope you are well? Have you managed to get your painting done? LOL

Thanks for listing some ideal books for Ramadan. By reading them I get to keep up with my target, although I will probably exceed my limit if I can complete the Quran in time for the end of Ramadan too and get sawaab at the same time!

I know exactly what you mean about keeping the house pristine and people only noticing things out of place. We think alot alike Anat. My sister in law is 'my kind of thinking girl' if that makes sense? My other two sister in laws have visited in the past and they are so messy and never shift anything after them - they dont' even make their own beds. It's a relief when they leave although it takes me ages to get my house in order. I'm alone so it's alot to cope with extra people when it comes to cooking and cleaning plus we have loads of visiters who come to see them too. My sister in law who has come this time is more considerate and her children are really well behaved which is a bonus. I'm definately like you though where I like everything in its place. We don't have a very big house so when little things are out of place it looks like a bombs hit it! There's nothing wrong with a nice tidy house though is there?

Thank you so much for wishing my boys luck in their exams. Your sentiments really touched me. I will let you know how they both get on when their results come in August. I wish you all the luck too.

Yes the Sookie books are by Charlaine Harris although I wouldn't compare them to the TV show. I tried to catch an episode and there was more sex and swearing in the first ten minutes than I've seen in my life. The books are better I think.

I understand what you mean about Steph Swainston writing, it's rare to get an author who writes so poetically these days. I have Maggie Stiefvater's books on my wishlist Anat and would appreciate you letting me know what you think of this series when you 've read them as I think they look really good.

Please keep in touch Anat and take care won't you? Bye xxx

Hi Anat, it's lovely to hear from you again. I can appreciate that it's been intense studying for your exams. I wish you all the success when you get your results. I love gardening too incidently!!

My reading challenge is going ok so far but I'm anxious about falling behind during the month of Ramadan. Most books are definately not ideal reading material for such an important month!

Thank you for recommending Love In A Headscarf. It sounds really really good and I've added it to my wish list. I will let you know when I've read it and we can compare notes. I'm smiling over your remarks on Julia Quinn's books as they are definately of the 'naughty but nice' variety. There was such an element of charm in 'The Secret Diaries of Miranda Cheever though Anat that I found myself being disappointed when the book finished because I wanted to read more. I haven't read her others yet. I had them all from the library and then all of a sudden the library would email me to say that another borrower had reserved them so I had to keep sending them back. I should have them all again in the next two weeks hopefully.

I have two boys Anat. One is 19 and the other is 17. The 19 yr old is studying Electrical Installation and the 17 yr old is studying Law. They are currently in the middle of exams so they are abit stressed. Thank you for asking :) My house guests stayed a for a week but now my sister in law is coming on Monday with her two children for three weeks. She lives in Norway. She's coming for a wedding in London. I've been frantically decorating this week to make everywhere look nice for her. I'm absolutely knackered!

I'm currently reading the Sookie Stackhouse series - have you heard of them? Ther are ten books in all and I'm on the 7th one. Let me know how you get on with your reading won't you. Please be patient with me during the next three weeks if I'm late replying. Take care won't you and enjoy your break. Bye!

Hi Anat, it's lovely to hear from you again. I hope you are well. I found myself chuckling over your first paragraph. If it's any consolation I expect to feel your pain in the coming summer break as I have duh duh duuuuuuuuhhhhh... House Guests coming too! I'm trying to cram my reading in before hand so I don't fall behind in my target.

I totally agree with your analysis of Burton's Wonderland. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing it yet but I've seen so many clips and its apparent that his take on it is superior to film versions in the past. I confess to trying to read the book several times but losing interest as a young girl. I preferred The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe in those days. The Queen Of Hearts really peed me off and it was always at this point I'd lose interest. I love Helena Bonham Carter's version though! Even Ann Hathaway's Queen is funny. As for Johnny Depp - amazing. His version of the Mad Hatter is fascinating. I'm looking forward to it coming out on DVD but I know I've missed a wonderful opportunity by missing it on the big screen. When Odeon boycotted it, it became a bit of a problem to view it where I live.

I'm so pleased you've become a fan of Lacuna Coil. Nightwish is slightly different as it's more operafied sometimes. Some of their tunes are catchy though. you should see me when I'm listening to them on my MP3 as I'm hoovering up. My son goes slightly pale.....

I didn't realise you had read some Regency romances. Any recommendations? I read my first Regency romance book about two weeks ago and absolutely loved it! It was Julia Quinn's The Secret Diaries Of Miss Miranda Cheever. I found it really charming and funny which surprised me as I usually get bored with romance these days. I used to read loads as a young girl. I ended up rushing to the library and borrowing a further six books of hers. I've not read these yet as I'm reading the Blue Blood series at the moment. Have you read them?

I've not read the Wicked series. The Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite childhood movies. I used to be fascinated with witches as a girl. Margaret Hamilton's witch is how I always imagined a witch to be. She was a perfect choice for the role I think. I undertsand the Wicked series shows a sympathetic side to her though which is intriguing so I've had them on my wishlist for a while. Please let me know how you get on with them.

Thank you for giving me your blog address. Both your names are beautiful and I hadn't realised I was chatting to a fellow Muslim which is an added bonus although I felt a connection to you anyway. I haven't had a chance to read your blog fully yet but I will as it looks really interesting. Anyway it's been a pleasure as always Anat. Take care won't you Bye!

Hi Anat, hope you are well. Wow I never realised Alice In Wonderland was so deep before your description. I read the first book as a child but couldn't get in to the second one Anat. The 1st book has certainly gained alot of interest again since Tim Burton's 3D feature has hit the big screen. It looks really good too. I think it will have adults reading them from the beginning again.

I'm so pleased you liked the tracks from Lacuna Coil. I like all of the one's you mentioned although I've not heard any new stuff from them for a while so I don't know what they are up to. You are also right in that their music is lively and perky, great while one is hoovering (chuckle) (I'm too old to jump randomly up and down lol) I like to listen to Within Temptation while I'm ironing. I usually sing to them at the same time which is quite painful for my neighbours - imagine a cat mewling (chuckle) I look forward to your views on Nightwish too. I 've put Decode on my MP3 but haven't had a chance to look up other material by Paramore. I will definately get round to it soon.

Let me know what you think of Frozen Fire when you read it. I've just finished reading Echoes from the Dead by Johann Theorin. It was excellent Anat. Here's what its about:

On a gray September day, on an island off the coast of Sweden, six -year -old Jens Davidsson ventured out of his backyard, walked out into a fog, and vanished….Now twenty years have passed, and in this magnificent debut novel of suspense—a runaway bestseller in Sweden—the boy’s mother returns to the place where her son disappeared, drawn by a chilling package sent in the mail… In it, lovingly wrapped, is one of Jens’ sandals—sandals Julia Davidsson put on her son’s feet that very last morning. Now, with only a handful of clues, Julia and her father are questioning islanders who were present the day Jens vanished—and making a shocking connection to Öland’s most notorious murder case: the killing spree of a wealthy young man who fled the island and died years before Jens was even born. Suddenly the island that once seemed so achingly familiar turns strange and dangerous… Until Julia finds herself facing truths she never imagined—about what really happened on that September day twenty years ago, about who may have crossed paths with little Jens in the fog, and how a child could truly vanish without a trace…until now.

It kept me guessing right up until the last page and even then I didn't see it coming! Totally absorbing and gripping stuff. Let me know what you decide to read next. I've started a really sad book that I've done nothing but bawl over since starting it and I'm only halfway through. It's called The Five People You Meet In Heaven By Mitch Albom.

Eddie is a grizzled war veteran who feels trapped in a meaningless life of fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. His days are a dull routine of work, loneliness, and regret. Then, on his 83rd birthday, Eddie dies in a tragic accident, trying to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakens in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a lush Garden of Eden, but a place where your earthly life is explained to you by five people. These people may have been loved ones or distant strangers. Yet each of them changed your path forever. One by one, Eddie’s five people illuminate the unseen connections of his earthly life. As the story builds to its stunning conclusion, Eddie desperately seeks redemption in the still-unknown last act of his life: Was it a heroic success or a devastating failure? The answer, which comes from the most unlikely of sources, is as inspirational as a glimpse of heaven itself.

It's so easy to empathise with Eddie and get caught up his story. I should finish it by tonight hopefully. Anyway take care Anat. Bye!

Hi Anat (chuckle) I loved the the first paragraph of your note, it was absolutely spot on lol. Thank you.

Thank you also for your book recomendations. I particularly liked Falling Leaves and have added it to my wish list. It sounds really good. I will let you know when I'm reading it so I can pick your brain. I've also managed to get six of Tim Bowler's books on reservation at my local library which I'm looking forward to reading. Frozen Fire was not a bad read Anat if you are interested. Here's a quick synopsis:

It starts with a phone call. “I’m dying,” a voice tells Dusty. Who is he and how has he gotten her cell number? Dusty wants no part of this strange boy . . . until he begins saying things that only someone who knows her intimately could say—things that lead her to think he knows the whereabouts of her brother, who disappeared over a year ago. Suddenly drawn in, Dusty very much wants to save this boy. Trouble is, she cannot find him. Part human, part spirit, he won’t let himself be found. He is too dangerous, he says. There are mobs of people who agree and who want to see this boy dead . . . and who will hurt anyone who stands in their way. A gripping, hair-raising mystery about a boy not of this world, and a girl determined to protect him.

I was surprised at the ending as I had begun to think that the mysterious boy may turn out to be her long lost brother but I won't tell you anymore in case I spoil it for you.

I totally agree with you over Robin McKinley. I found myself annoyed too at how she was getting riled up over fans wanting a sequel. You are right in that you can't force a story on page but I really felt that there was alot of potential for a sequel. Oh well.

Thank you for the links to Paramore. I love Decode and remember it from Twilight. While I was listening to your clips I came across "The Only Exception" and quite liked that too :) Let me know what you think of the clips from Lacuna Coil and Nightwish won't you? I'm quite excited to know what you will think but its ok if you don't like them honest. Swapping bands around is a great opportunity to discover new bands I think so sooner or later we will stumble across a band that we will totally agree on like we do with Within Temptation.

Anyway, take care Anat and chat soon I hope. Oh and "in the mean time, take care" is a cool signature by the way ;)

Hi Anat, I feel your pain, it really must be awful having to wait for your results. I really hope you do well though as i have the utmost respect for people who go into medicine. I completely understand that you won't have time to read many books as your priority is going to be your studies and reading is leisure time. I usually read to help me sleep as my brain goes into overdrive at night and I tend to worry about things. Reading takes my mind off things. As for blogging - I've not tried it neither! I have a facebook and bebo account but I rarely go on them as they can take up loads of time esp bebo. I love Shelfari though and rarely miss a day when I don't log in either to add books or check my messages. Its brilliant to be able to talk about books esp when one has just finished reading them and they've affected you in some way. Some books can be pretty deep don't you think?

I can't believe you are familiar with Tim Bowler's books. Star Seeker sounds really good and I'm going to pop down the library in an attempt to get a copy. Star Seeker is the one about the boy who who falls into bad company and is forced to break into an old lady's house. Once inside he is confronted with the sound of a girl crying, and through a locked keyhole sees a young girl standing alone, crying in despair. Luke becomes drawn into finding out who the girl is, why she is in the house, and why she is so unhappy. I think he's a piano player too. Have you read Frozen Fire, River Boy and Shadows too?

Anat I've just looked up info on the sequal to Sunshine and you are right there isn't one. Sorry about that. Fans of the book are mentioning it all over the place but i looked up Robin McKinleys website on the matter and she is downright pissed about people asking her about it which I think is a bit ungrateful. I mean if there is interest then why not write one? Here's the site where she 'explains' her reasons: robinmckinleysblog.com/.../there-is-no-sequel-to-sunshine/

Thanks for recommending Labyrinth. I own Sepulchre by the same author but haven't read it yet. Have you? The Winter Ghosts by her sounds good too. Let me know if you manage to get a copy of Road of the Dead. I got it off the library so hopefully you will too.

Are there any songs from Paramore that you would recommend for beginners? I heard one of their songs in a Smallville episode but can't for the life of me remember the words to ask you. I not very familiar with The Killers or The Bravery. I only know and like one track from The Killers called 'Somebody Told Me'. From The Bravery I only know and like: 'Time Won't Let Me Go' and 'Above and Below'. To listen to tracks click on:

Hi Anat, I'm so glad to hear your exams are over, you must be relieved. I hope all your hard work pays off and you get the results you hope for. Wow its great you managed to read so many books in a short time - definately something to boast about LOL! Have you ever set a target for yourself and tried to see how many books you can read in a year? I've tried to set a target of 120 books and 30,000 pages this year. It works out roughly 10 books a month. I'm on target so far but its not easy as I only get a chance to read at night.

Yes you are right about Sunshine. It has mixed reviews - some loved it some struggled abit. I loved the idea behind the book. The plot was great as I love anything to do with vampires. It's just the writing I struggled with. I heard there's a sequel, you must let me know if you get round to reading it as I'd be interested to learn where her relationship with Constantine goes. Also I agree that a prequel would be good too as I would like know more about her father as well as Constantine's origins. Sunshine on its own despite it's lengthy description left a couple of questions.

I've given supernatural/fantasy books a rest for a bit on am reading more family issues type books which I'm really surprised about. I couldn't get enough of vamps, werewolves, witches at one point. It's nice to try something different sometimes. I've recently finished Tim Bowler's Frozen Fire and have now started Kevin Brooks' Road of the Dead. I would like to recommend this book to you Anat as the quality of the writing is excellent. Here's a quick synopsis:

On a storm-ravaged night, a 19-year-old girl is kidnapped, raped, and killed. Three days later, her two younger brothers set out in search of her murderer. Cole, 17, is a dark-eyed devil who doesn't care if he lives or dies, while Ruben, 14, is a strange child who sometimes, inexplicably, experiences sensations above and beyond his own. This is the story of the boys' journey from their half-gypsy home on a London junk lot to the ghostly moors of Devon, where they hope and fear to find the truth about their sister's death. It's a long road, cold and hard and violent. It's THE ROAD OF THE DEAD.

Both the brothers are psychic and reading about them try to piece together vital clues about the last moments of their sister Rachel's life is really upsetting at times. The younger brother had a vision of his sisters death at the moment of her death too. Gripping stuff.

I know what you mean about Tears of Passion's song. A couple of years ago i would never have listened to something like it. I love the lyrics though and it's got such a haunting aspect to it. I read somewhere that the singer died of cancer so it makes it more poignant as the song is about dying. Let me know your views on the WT album and which are your favourite tracks. A friend of mine is into Paramore so I'm going to check out their songs when I can. Have you heard of them? I've just brought Editors Bood up on youtube and its not bad. Reminds me abit of The Killers and The Bravery a bit. I will check out their other stuff - thanks Anat. Anyway let me know what you are reading and take care Bye!

Hi Anat, thank you for your book recommendations, I read Dracula and Dorian Gray as a teenager and liked them especially Dracula. I didn't like Sunshine though Anat. My stubborness allowed me to finish it as I always finish what I start with books. There was too much tedious stuff in between the pages that it was hard not to keep skipping the pages. It was only ever good when Constantine was in it and unfortunately he barely is. We are hardly told anything about his background though and even Sunshine's background is a mystery especially with regards to her father. I think there's a sequel but I'm giving it a miss.

I'm enjoying a good old fashioned ghost story at the moment called Breath by Cliff McNish. It's quite sad in places. As for The Swan Song, I know what you mean as its a different tone to what WT usually sing. It's got some Celtic overtones though that I love to listen to as I'm falling asleep. Really soothing. The Rasmus are probably an acquired taste! One either likes the or they don't. It was kind of you to go to the trouble of looking them up on youtube though. Thank you. Theres a really good tune I would like you to check out and then tell me what you think. It's probably my all time favourite track. Its called Angel by Tears of Passion. Here's the link - hope you like it but its ok if you don't. Take care Bye!!

Hi Anat, if you liked the Twilight saga then there's a good chance you will like the House of Night series. To be on the safe side though you should check out your local library for some copies rather than spend money. The books are based on a 16-year-old girl named Zoey Redbird as she is “Marked” by a vampyre tracker and begins to undergo the “Change” into an actual vampyre. The change from human to vampyre takes four years, during which time the adolescents, known as "fledglings", must attend one of the "House of Night" boarding schools. Some will survive the change, some will not. Zoey is different in that she has been gifted powers by the goddess Nix. Later Zoey discovers her amazing new power to conjure the elements: earth, air, fire, water and spirit.
When Zoey discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look within herself to embrace her destiny – with a little help from her new vampire friends. I also recommend the Morganville Vampire series. I'm hooked on these too.

I think its awesome that you are studying medicine. I genuinely wish you all the best as I know how difficult this particular area is. As for our favourite groups Within Temptation and Evanescence, I can definately relate to you finding them inspiring. It must be an amazing trilogy you were writing. My WT favourites are The Heart Of Everything, Final Destination, Destroyed, Forgiven, The Truth Beneath the Rose, A Dangerous Mind, Aquarious, Forsaken and The Swan Song. My favourite Evanescence songs are Tourniquet, Whisper, Taking Over Me, Everybody's Fool, My Immortal and Missing. I like all of Linkin Park's records, Chester has an amazing voice. If you have a minute to check out The Rasmus , I think you may like the following tracks - No Fear, Open My Eyes and In The Shadows. It's great to be able to share these bands with you as there are not many people in the Uk who have even heard of Within Temptation.

Anyway, that book and cup of chocalate is beckoning Anat so I will leave you now. Take care Bye xxx

Nisareen - So Much To Read So Little Time says

Yes I've heard of the Lost Prophets thanks and they are ok. I think I'm more goth rock inclined which is really wierd as 10 years ago I was into boy/girl bands! My all time favourite band is Depeche Mode. Once I heard Within Temptation's What have you Done, Linkin Park's Crawling and Evanescence's Bring Me To Life though, a whole new world seemed to open up for me. What are your favourite tracks by these bands? Have you heard of the Rasmus too?
