I'm a nonpracticing librarian with a background in children's book editing, and I've been a voracious reader forever. The books on my shelf include ones that I've read as well as those that I'm interested in reading--I'm using a shelf as a way of keeping track and not forgetting things I'd like to read (to go along with the little handwritten lists that I keep in my purse).
I'm not a book club person (I'm better at reading books than talking about them), but I'm always looking for recommendations from people with similar tastes--and even sometimes from people with very different tastes.
