This book drew me in so thoroughly that I read it in two sittings, ignoring errands and housework and everything else until I finished the book. Tana French's writing is perfectly pitched for the story; it's occasionally over the top, but effectively so, creating a mood that stays with you long after the book is done.

I didn't feel duped by the ending so much as I felt kind of bereft. I knew I was going to miss the characters terribly, and I was very disappointed at the way things turned out between two of them. Mysteries are not usually good for re-reading, since you already know what happens the second time through, but this is a book that I'll be going back to again. I read Ms. French's second book, The Likeness, as soon as it came out, and I'll be eagerly anticipating the next one...and the next one...and so on.

I haven't read David Mitchell's other books, but it's easy to see why he's been shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice. His writing is dazzlingly good, and his 13-year-old protagonist, Jason Taylor, is both captivating and completely convincing.
