"People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading"
- Logan Pearsall Smith

I enjoy classics. But not classics that people love just because they should. And I hardly ever read American literature, unless it's going to be REALLY good. European all the way. I absolutely love Penguin books and try to... more »

I've been reading the "Paul" graphic novels by Michel Rabagliati lately. They're somewhere between Persepolis and Maus-type writing/storytelling. The first book (which is more a short book) in the series is "Paul In the Country" but is harder to find (but very worth-it if you can dig it up). The second book "Paul Has A Summer Job" is much easier to find, and stands alone well even if you haven't read the first book. A very well-told, on-going, poignant story of growing up in Quebec!

Heeeeey, just over two months until I'm back to semi-normality. I no longer have Facebook and I'm not sure if your Whatsapp is working; decided that this was the best forum for contact. Tell me about your life. Also, have you read White Tiger? Right up your street I think.

That sounds good. You can have Maus II as well now, and you could cover a few classics as well: a month in the country (which is probably my favourite book) and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (he was a mathematician so it's like course work). I also have a dozen illustrated novellas by critically acclaimed authors like J G Ballard, Paul Theroux, Fay Weldon and William Trevor, so you could sample their work as well. You can do it!

Yes, nearly finished Maus II and I've put A sense of an ending on your pile. You should also read Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and The headswoman by Kenneth Grahame. And I will finish Logicomix this year!

Hello Amy. I read your great review after I'd already struggled through Spring Flowers, Spring Frost and posted my clueless review. Ordinarily I never read reviews before reading the book, because I prefer my impression of the book to come first-hand from the author. Just a little thing I have...

I was completely blown away by your review! Completely! I could never have explained any of it like you did, and I think I owe the book an immediate re-read! I'm ashamed I don't know more about European history than I do, especially an event as recent as the fall of communism in the former USSR (as we were taught to call it back in my school days, a long time ago).

May I have your permission to cross-post your review under my review in my favorite group? Otherwise if I just refer to it in the general Shelfari reviews, a lot of people are too busy these days to go there to read it. I can guarantee many people in my group will read it, because we're bookworms who like book reviews. I want all my friends to read a real review of what the book is about, not what I wrote. You can go to the group and check it out first if you'd like. It's called "Paging All Bookworms." Feel free to join us!

I wish I'd read your review before or during my reading of the book. I had only a vague, unclear feeling about what was going on, and I found the romance part lackluster. I'm starting to reread it today before I return it to the library. Thank you. CC

Pleased to hear it. Good old commuting. Basically, I've been informed that there's a library on our ship so I'm taking about five of my own books in case it's rubbish but raiding their collection if they have amazing things that I don't own. Winwin situation. And sun and books and good tiiiiiiiimes :D Also, re-addicted to Terry Pratchett. I've accepted that I have an addictive personality and will always be obsessed with about three things at any one time. On the SATC tangent, I only finished it in the wild hope that it would all be a joke. It. Wasn't. xxx

Advice: don't read Sex and the City. It's dire. I had a massive book-buying day today and am now holing myself up for the next few days.
I reread all the HPs, so I'm re-obsessed and I'm glad I did because there was loads I'd forgotten including the dreadful use of punctuation in the first three. BUT I'll let old JK off because she's just so darn lovely. Also, I'm going to come and steal some books kaythanxbai. xxx
