  • Stories for Christmas by Charles Dickens
    • Rated 4 stars

I started this right after Thanksgiving and finished up New Years weekend. Some really great stories (A Christmas Carol, of course, The Cricket On The Hearth, The Seven Poor Travellers, Going Into Society, Tom Tiddlers Ground, and Somebody's Luggage) and a few not so good ones too (most notably The Chimes). Less than half of these stories have any connection to Christmas, I'm not sure why they were collected as "Stories for Christmas". Best guess is that it was to capitalize on the populartiy of A Christmas Carol.

Another great story from Neil Gaiman, I didn't want it to end. I love the ending btw, just as it should have been and plenty of run up for a sequel, which I hope will someday come. It's got the Gaiman trademark of reality tinged gothic fantasy with equal parts horror and (Douglas Adams-ish) comedy. This story is sort of a dark, twisted underground Wizard of Oz. Door and her three companions are sent by the great and terrible Angel Islington on a quest which they must complete before he answers their questions. A few twists and a lot of turns and a really good read.

Great collection of short stories, poems and oddities from the genius that is Neil Gaiman. There were a few I really liked, A Study in Emerald, Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire, Other People, Locks, Goliath (which was written for the Matrix website), Sunbird and best of all The Monarch of the Glen, which is a continuation of the story of Shadow from American Gods. The book is worth it just for that last one but there's a lot to like in this collection.

At times disturbing, at times very funny and always very well written. This book surprised me, not at all what I expected.

Loved, loved, loved this book. A wonderfully spun web of a story. The amount of humor in the book surprised me. It's as if the Neil Gaiman of American Gods was infused with a little of the spirit of Douglas Adams. I recommend it to anyone who likes to get swept away by a grand tale, tall or otherwise.

I didn't like this book at first because it wasn't what I thought it would be (the jacket cover made me think it was a comedy, like maybe a Christopher Moore light, it wasn't) but once I figured out what it was (an adventure/mystery) I was able to get into it and thought it was a pretty good read. It was kind of like a movie on Disney channel or Nickelodeon.

I liked the story, it's comic bookish in it's unbelievability but I like comic books, so that wasn't a problem. The only problem I had really was that a good 1/3 or more of the book I didn't know who was who. I feel like if I had kept a cheat sheet I would have enjoyed it more. Besides the confusion really good read.

I just finished this a few minutes ago and am still digesting it but I believe I would have rated it higher if the ending had been a little clearer. The story is interesting and gothic and the climatic part of the book is very engrossing and then you get to the end and your like, "Okay. What?". Over all though it was a good read, parts of the ending were really good and tied into the theme of the book and the part I didn't really like at the end wasn't enough to ruin the whole story (like the end of The Historian did for that book).

Wow, great book. I wish it had a companion piece or perhaps a annotated copy that detailed who all the different gods were and where they came from. It was great that not only was it a fantasy/horror story but it was also a mystery to be figured out. The part with Shadows not so dead wife kept putting me in mind of a Christopher Moore book, I don't know if it was meant to be humorous are not but it was a bit of comic relief, up to the end anyway. The only warning I'll give is that there were some very NC-17 sex scenes in the book, so not for the under aged kiddos.

My favorite Moore book so far, I mean Lamb and Stupidest Angel are freakin hilarious but I really liked this one too. Tucker Case is a loser who has let others make all his decisions for him and I identified with him very much, great character. All the other characters are great as well- Kimi the cross-dressing navigator, Beth the multi-personality sky goddess bitch, the old cannibal, and of course Roberto the rhinestoned sunglasses wearing talking fruit bat and quite a few more make this a hard book to put down.
