Kuwana Haulsey is the author of the critically acclaimed novels The Red Moon (Villard) and Angel of Harlem (One World/Ballantine).
As a 2007 Penn/Faulkner Foundation honoree, Kuwana was named one of three New Voices in American Literature. That year, Angel of Harlem was chosen to be a featured
book in the international book festival, Literaire Lente, in Europe. It was also named a 2007 Winner of the New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age.
In 2005 the Blackboard Bestsellers organization gave Angel of Harlem the Medal of Courage, an award created specifically to honor the book. Along with Spike Lee and Octavia Butler, Blackboard invited Kuwana to be a featured speaker at the Chicago book festival.
The Red Moon was chosen as a Washington Post Notable Book of the Year. It also won a finalist prize at the Hurston-Wright Legacy Awards.
In addition to writing novels, Kuwana is also a freelance journalist and editor. She served as the editor and artistic director for the book Inspirations of the Heart by Michael Bernard Beckwith. As an editor of the biography Hal Jackson: The House That Jack Built, Kuwana was part of the team that brought the legendary story of broadcast pioneer Hal Jackson to life. Published by Harper Collins in 2001, the book was showcased at The Smithsonian Institute. She also co-authored the detective novel Who Killed Tiffany Jones? (Harper Collins)
Kuwana has taught at the UCLA Extension Program, the Penn/Faulkner “Writers in Schools” Program, Rutgers University as a guest lecturer and at the Agape International Spiritual Center. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their spoiled pets. She’s in the process of completing her third novel, Fracture.
