“What a bunch of tripe from a bitter and pessimistic person who doesn't even understand the concepts which she continuously pats herself on the back for "burying." I'm not a big fan of the Secret by itself - it is obviously oversimplified and commercialized, but when this author starts out by saying how ridiculous affirmations are and how they derailed her and ruined her life, one can't help but step back and think, "what is her problem?"
Obviously, it is her over-addictive personality. From doing affirmations to eating to just being cranky, this lady does everything in a big way, and then blames the concepts for "not working." Without credentials, she delves into entire chapters on subjects with no real basis or research, relying almost entirely on personal vendettas and anectdotes from people she knows or stories she has heard of. The back of the book says it is an "essential work founded upon truly impressive research." A few books, some newspaper articles from the internet, and some Wikipedia references hardly constitute "impressive research." Her entire chapter on psychology is completely ridiculous and over-simplified. It is obvious she has had no training in this area either.
I really can't say enough bad things about this book. The author calls it a "nondenominational approach" and states that readers will recognize "Eastern influences." Sure, if you throw the work Karma around and want to call that an Eastern influence. However, there is an over-all Christian theme pervasive throughout the book. Even the work "nondenominational" refers to Christianity. Obviously, the author does not even know this much and has had little more experience than an "impromptu lecture" for her comparative religion studies.
I would recommend staying away from this book. It's not even good for a laugh. It is just pitiful and sad.
