I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my parents for imparting the insatiable desire to read. While such a prospect certainly provides opportunities to explore the world and better oneself, it also encourages obsessively compulsive book buying habits. Nevertheless, this is one insane habit I gladly support, encourage, and refuse to give... more »

Love Rick Steves travel guides! During a recent trip to Europe, I pulled out (*gasp* the writer suggest it!!) parts of the book for locations I was visiting. Great suggestions and tips! Now I think I've visited every restaurant Steves recommends in Rothenberg, Germany :-) If you travel on a budget, don't want to waste your time with tourist traps and enjoy the local culture--this is the book for you.

This book might have received higher ratings, had I not made the mistake of reading it in 5-20 minute chunks. Spoiler Alert: time travel is a usual occurrence in the story and a little hard to follow when you're reading sporadically. That said, I'd like to read more Vonnegut. My 5-20 minute stretches were enjoyable.

  • Good News About Injustice Youth Edition : A Witness of Courage in a Hurting World
    • Rated 4 stars

Gary Haugen has been active in various human rights committees and organizations since the mid-1980's. His experiences gathering evidence to prosecute perpetrators in the '94 Rwandan genocide led him to found the International Justice Mission (a non-profit human rights organization). Haugen, a devoted Christian, shares his journey to understand the Christian's role in upholding justice in the world. Haugen argues that Christians must "Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows." (Isaiah 1:17)

The more you learn about human rights violations throughout the world, the easier it is to become depressed or frozen in panic. Haugen understands the struggle that American Christians find themselves in, blessed & compassionate, without the tools to help. In a practical manner, Haugen details the reality of dealing with police brutality, forced prostitution, child labor and other atrocities that his organization fights against. It's empowering to know that there are ways to be involved in bringing justice to every precious human being. I was stirred to action after reading this book!

The "Freakonomics" of business. Quick read. I would have liked the authors to dig deeper into the psychology behind irrational decisions people make.

An amazing true story about a women who was a child during WWII. Her family lived in Holland and they risked their lives to hide Jews from the Nazi's. The forgiveness and compassion Corrie has after enduring concentration camps and the death of family members is extraordinary. I reread this book ever few years.
