Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more! We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc. I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same. And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!Love, Jaya
Hello, Let me formally introduce myself, my name is Harriet and i am trying to start an African American library in my town of Jackson, TN for teenagers and young adults to keep them off of the streets and reading books. So far we have about 70 book and about 30 teenagers and young adults so the books have been read really fast. I would like to know if you would like to donate any african american fiction and nonfiction books that you would like to get rid of. We are trying to expand and need more books but can't afford them right now because we only have a handful of people doing this project. If you are interested in donating any books to us please feel free to email me back at your convenience and I will send you the address for the books to be shipped to. If you send them or not I would like to thank you in advance just for taking the time to read this email and see our concern. God bless you and gave a great day.Sincerely Harriet

Count down to Guilty--10 daysAmaley, I like to post my latest review:Guilty of Love available on line now.In stores August 28th.Visit www.GuiltyofLove.Check out latest review from Romantic Times Magazine:Contemporary, African-AmericanGUILTY OF LOVE Pat Simmons4 starsSimmons’ sometimes whimsical approach to delivering the message of salvation is anchored by opportune scriptures. The author boldly tackles issues like abortion, child abuse and anger toward God, adeptly guiding readers into romance, reconciliation and restoration as this novel flows effortlessly from haunting pasts to delectable happiness. SUMMARY: Steeped in his African heritage, Parke is seeking his queen. His neighbor Cheney is supposedly too tall and independent for him, but he’s smitten anyway. Parke commits his soul to helping Cheney defeat her personal demons as a nosy, elderly neighbor proves to be a bridge between what we see on the outside, affairs of the heart and, ultimately, our relationship with Christ. Thanks. I'll definitely look into getting the book. Saw some cool things on your shelf. :)
Hey! I just got "A Long Way Gone..." a few days ago from a local bookstore. I just started reading it and so far it is great!
I am currently reading 100 ways to motivate others and from welfare to faring well by Ken Brown
Hey Amaley,How are you doing?I'm reading Harry Potter book 5 so that I can move on to 6 before book 7 comes out this summer.
Hey Amaley,I love your bookshelf too. I have to agree that Things Fall Apart is a great book. I read that book more than once and enjoyed every read.
Hey You,I love your shelf. May I recommend a book for you to read? Perhaps you may want to read a book I read called "things fall apart" this is great book. I trully enjoyed reading.
I also read Colour of Water back when it was first published. It is indeed a book you won't be able to put down. Very well written. Brutally honest.
Hi, Amaley,You asked about Kaffir Boy. I used to teach the book to 10th graders. I found it to be a very good book for describing the racist and oppressives condtions in South Africa under the right rule regime. The author of the book was and is no radical or freedom fighter, but his story seems very honest and insightful. It's still worth a read today, in my opinion.
