I need some recommendations for contemporary fiction, particularly by other women. I feel like writing really changed after television became integral to the American landscape and don't want to read things that "I can see in my head." but things that take me over completely. Who are the young Alice Munros, Joyce Carol Oates and Doris Lessings... more »

I went to hear Joyce Carol Oates read at the Mystery Book shop near Chambers Street. She was extremely interesting. Do you know when she is reading again? I also saw Ann Patchett with Jonathan Safran Foer sometime last year and that was amazing. Please keep me posted if you learn of any interesting readings in our area and I will do the same!

I love to see fellow New Yorkers on here! Do you ever go readings or to see authors in the area?

I did like White Teeth - but this might be because I listened to it on audio books. Since I live on the Oregon Coast I drive long distances. The radio is unspeakable. But I find that the problem with audio books is that I tend to be less objective than I am when I actually read the words. I also tend to be less critical of a movie I see on DVD vs. one I see on the big screen. Having read your message again - I don't know about The Darling. It is written by Russell Banks - but I think he does a very good job of getting inside a person who 'went radical' in a very extreme way. It does have a very 'what is the point of life, anyway?' ending - but that is not something that puts me off...

Reading your note on 'Transgressives' reminded me that I need to reread Doris Lessing. After going through a three year frenzy of reading her books in the early '70's - I had lost touch with her. When she won the prize this fall - I was thrilled to find she was still alive! And now - coming across your post - I'm overdue. She was a huge influence on me.

I like your shelf very much. I've never read Doris Lessing, but now I think I should.
