The ending really ruined this book for me. Just stupid.

I've seen the movie a million times, but after paying a visit to the Stanley Hotel, I decided to finally read the book. Although it's rare for me to say this, I thought the movie was a lot better, and it was interesting to find out that a lot of the best scenes from the movie are not even in the book. The major issue was that I just didn't find the book to be all that scary (although the topiary garden did get to me a little bit). I also didn't like the parts from Jack's perspective, as I found him incredibly annoying and unlikeable. In my opinion, Kubrick took a mediocre book and really made it his own.

It's strange to use the word "beautiful" when referring to a book about a disfigured, drug-addicted porn star and a mentally unstable woman who carves gargoyles for a living, but that's the word that comes to my mind when thinking about this book. Loved it.

Not only is this book, at best, a poorly written reinvention of The Secret Garden, the author actually has the audacity to write Frances Hodgson Burnett in as a character and suggest that the garden in the story is the inspiration behind her famous novel. On top of that, the book is unnecessarily long and the constant changing of characters and time frames is just annoying. The fairy tales were poorly written and completely unoriginal. Even the big secret is boring and predictable. A total waste of time, in my opinion.
