  eccentric family and their polyglot friends and neighbors—Hungarians,
  Germans, Romanians, Gypsies, Russians, Ukrainians—surviving together in a
  space where fable and reality are impossible to untangle. An aunt who may not have existed, a midnight bus running without a precise route, a wedding celebrated in the mansion of the former dictator where a guest recognizes the piano stolen from his family half a century ago by the Communist regime—these are real fictions about an uncanny world.
