I used to have the longest bookworm in gradeschool. I d gobble up lunch to go to the library and lose myself in stories. My greatest dream then was to be locked up in a library. But somehow, I ve lost touch with my book... more »

  • Carry Yourself Back to Me
    • Rated 5 stars

The book in one sentence: A study of a woman's journey through loss, betrayal, childhood revelations, and forgiveness and redemption.

My thoughts: When I first held this book, for some odd reason, the cover doesn't do anything for me. For one, those red letters look creepy. Then when I read the back blurb that it featured the story of a has-been country singer with a dog named Detour, I was having second thoughts. One, anything country (especially country music) isn't really my thing. And then the main character is nursing a broken heart. (This screams stereotype! Er, does Crazy Heart ring a bell?) And a dog named Detour, are you kidding me?

Once I started through, I found that this is definitely not your stereotypical country sob story. I'm glad that I gave this book a second chance because this is a very special read.

  • The Economics of Ego Surplus: A Novel of Economic Terrorism
    • Rated 4 stars

The book in one sentence: An unlikely academic falls into an investigation of a complicated web of economic terrorism.

It was quite ironic that I started reading The Economics of Ego Surplus: A Novel of Economic Terrorism by Paul McDonnold around the week of August 5 and onwards which saw some historic and alarming changes in the US economy. This backdrop for my reading made this story even more credible in my eyes.

  • That Day In September
    • Rated 4 stars

The book in one sentence: An ordinary man's first-hand account of that horrifying day in September and how it changed his life.

My thoughts: There are books. And there are stories. Some books remain simply books. This isn't one of them. To read this unadorned, unembellished true story of Artie Van Why's account of September 11 was a privilege for me. Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us, Artie.

  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    • Rated 5 stars

Silly me, I had watched the movie and though it was a long love story ala Somewhere in Time. But I was in for a surprise. This is a short story, told succinctly (60 pages, with illustrations). It examines a life lived in reverse, and how it seems to be both a blessing and curse.

The lovely color illustrations (they look like the belong in an art gallery) in this volume by Calef Brown are fantastic!

    New-old fairy tale
Beautifully told story about the coming-of-age of a young man who promises to fetch a fallen star for the woman he loves. He gets more than he bargains for and goes on a journey in Faerie, discovers his roots, and unwittingly discovers his true love and true self.
Good reading for young adults; although younger kids may want to watch the movie instead - the book has some tame sex scenes.

Funny! I am one of these people who have a horrible compulsion to edit typos and punctuation and it's actually a relief to hear someone write about it. I am not alone. And wait, I DO have a life, and I HAVE relaxed about correcting people ... lest they get offended.

I did have a few issues with the book. One, it is written for a British audience, and many punctuation rules and examples are British, of course. If you're used to American conventions, the rules may seem "wrong" to you. Two, after reading one chapter on one specific punctuation mark, say the comma, you can get a little fatigued with example after example. So best read this in several sittings.

This isn't a book for everyone. Don't bother with it if ...
... you're one of those people where bad grammar and punctuation (wrong or lack of) just don't grate on your nerves, DON'T bother with this book. It will seem like a mountain was made out of a molehill.
... you're NOT interested in proper punctuation. At the least, one needs to keep an open mind.

I think this book would make a great addition to my Strunk and White. Or maybe they should make an Americanized version?

  • The Graveyard Book
    • Rated 5 stars

I'm now re-reading this. The story is imaginative: a boy raised by ghosts. The paradox is that he learns more than anyone to open his heart to living life to the fullest by living with ghosts in a graveyard.

What was I expecting? Sex in the City? I don't know. Non-thinking fare at its best.
