In the past, I've been brutally honest; that had not been received well. Turning to a life of idiocy, I spent hours in my head looking for the right thing to say, only to have my efforts fall on deaf ears, my words not quite believable, the receiver not understanding the journey to my verbalizations. On the flip side, I admit to listening to... more »

  • Girl on the Couch: Life, Love, and Confessions of a Normal Neurotic

Lorna Martin pens her memoir of her one-year journey to self-awareness on the therapist's chair. She's Scottish, a journalist by trade and a hopeless romantic, a term I used to think positive, but now question my personal definition of that phrase. This was brutally honest; and I was shocked at how much I could empathize with the ramblings of her mind. She deals with the need to be perfect and better than others. She deals with the holier than thou attitude, not the "I'm better than everyone" holier than thou (though it's addressed as well) but the I must never do anything that can be construed as negative attitude. We learn that each and every emotion is valid, should be experienced and dealt with. It's okay to experience anger, jealously, doubt. No need to feel an insurmountable guilt because the attitude is not ladylike. We can allow ourselves to be average, not always perfect or the top performer. She allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief, and I'm thankful.

I like the concept of this book; the author interviews religious leaders of various faiths asking them questions about Jesus. Very thought provoking.

A history of how prejudice went from religious based to color based (at least in the US).

A story about the unfailing love and wisdom of women. I cried while reading, which means it moved me in areas that are touching in my own personal life.

  • Organized for Success : Top Executives and CEOs Reveal the Organizing Principles That Helped Them Reach the Top

Excellent book for those bound for upward mobility both in your personal and professional lives. The author interviews CEO's for some of the world's largest companies and gleans a set of strategies to affect self-discipline and efficiency. My favorite part of this book is that all her suggestions are practical and applicable to anyone from supervisor, middle manager, and beyond. Check out the TRAF method and the chapter about how CEO's focus on one thing at a time (as opposed to multi-tasking). Excellent.

I have to admit I enjoyed this book alot. It's unbelievable the way the author spins a tale of different lineages and histories, gods and spiritual guides, war and triumph, love and erotica. Truly amazing.

A gripping story of a young teenager's redemption after a rape at a teen party. We live and breathe the story through her thoughts; silence allows one the chance to truly see b/c there is not the distraction of speech. A wonderful YA read.

An emotional portrayal of a young man's personal account of his life as boy soldier in Sierre Leone's civil war. I can't imagine a journey so difficult. I knew little of the war before reading this memoir. It has touched my heart. Cruelty, Revenge, Family, Friends, Honor, Strength, Sadness, Redemption - this story and all of the aforementioned themes running rampant through its 229 pages and lets the reader see the war from a perspective often lost on civilians.
