Wow! Elbow, McCarthy, & Koans all on the same page. It sounds like somebody who should be my friend. Oh, wait...have coffee with the Colemans & such. I am reading Haruki Murakami & bowing in his general direction. I am at work on a longish poem. We'll see what comes of it. Parenting is my practice. Bedtime is my koan.

Thanks for the friend invite1 I see you have Peter Elbow's Writing With Power on your shelf -- I took a class with him in college - it was pretty cool!

Taken me a little while to reply. Pardon me. No, I am not familiar at all with Francisco de Osura. I need to brush up I guess. Can you tell me more? Hope you're well.

Did you ever see the Skeleton Key to Name of the Rose at Powell's? I saw it once at Acres and always regretted not having bought it.

When I lived in London, I had a good friend from Co. Cork, Ireland who was absolutely obsessed with Julian of Norwich. Being the catholic that I TRY to be, I'm familiar with her writings. Wonderful meditative reading. Thomas Merton is one of my heros! As is Dorothy Day.

We have a similar place here, called Acres of Books. It's not as large as Powell's, though.

    Hi Alison-
Seems like we enjoy a lot of the same books. If you're in Portland, I'll bet you've been to Powell's. I was there several years ago and fell in for quite some time. Great place!

Finally figured out how to upload books, but I don't think the UI is terribly intuitive.

    Hi Alison,
I completely agree with your analogy. While I’ve never been a Quaker, I find it difficult to focus when there are too many distractions and colors. I just started a new group, The Murakami Zone, for all things related to Murakami, the Twilight Zone, Zen and similar themes; however the ever-changing Shelfari UI doesn’t make much sense to me. I can’t seem to upload any books…Do you know how this is supposed to work? Either way, I’d be honored if you would join The Murakami Zone.

I was a zendo student in a Soto monastery many years ago, but haven’t maintained a regular practice in quite a while. Soto Zen has definitely changed my perspective on many things, but I’m not self-disciplined enough to maintain a practice on my own. More recently, I’ve been impressed with Arjia Rinpoche and his Tibetan Center in my area, but it’s quite different from the Zen tradition so I tend to feel somewhat lost.

    Hi,
Thanks for the invite. It is gladly accepted. Judging from my first glance at your books and your profile it would seem we have a lot in common.

    Best,
